Oversees prepress and manufacturing and reprint activities of one-, two-, and four-color custom college textbooks and their ancillaries (including digital derivatives and also media ancillaries).

Major Responsibilities:

• Coordinates and oversees all phases of production and manufacturing for custom college textbooks, components, and ancillaries (access cards, e-books, DVDs, print manuals) and reprints.
• Strategizes with Operations and Custom Editorial to determine the most efficient and cost-effective approach to producing the custom product.
• Collaborates with Custom Editorial, Packagers, and Manufacturing Vendors to create schedules. Monitors progress and makes schedule changes as needed.
• Collaborates with Production Editorial, traffics, and sometimes reviews, production materials (e.g., manuscript to composition, sample page material, design samples, art and photo proofs, page proofs).
• Negotiates with vendors. Communicates project details to vendors (compositors and printers), including: schedule, book specifications, budgets.
• Troubleshoots technical issues with editors and vendors; provides solutions to problems.
• Creates, reviews, and submits manufacturing purchase orders. Supervises submission of final files for printing. Coordinates details of print and bind schedules with printers and sends final files to the printer.
• Oversees distribution of project files through defined distribution channels (e.g., PDF e-books, ePub e-books, extensible e-books, accessible digital files, etc.)
• Ensures final project files are uploaded to archive.

Required Skills / Knowledge:

• Creative thinking; Strong organizational and communication skills; attention to detail – accurate and thorough; work well under deadlines; ability to set priorities effectively; flexibility to adapt as new tasks develop in response to changes in technology or market.
Experience Needed:

• Minimum four years of book production/manufacturing experience. Educational publishing background a plus. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and Word. Knowledge of InDesign a plus. Good math skills. Graphic Arts background helpful.
