Newsweek Daily Beast is looking for a Director of Business Development who will develop and oversee external partnerships that drive new revenue, traffic, and/or engagement across all of the company’s digital properties. In this capacity, the Director must conduct the strategic analysis necessary to identify emerging areas of revenue/traffic opportunity and then execute on these growth areas by entering into partnerships with the firms that are best suited to help us take advantage of those opportunities. The Director will work closely with key internal stakeholders across editorial, product, and sales to analyze all aspects of any proposed partnership to ensure that it aligns with our strategic goals, is well-structured, and is successfully launched on schedule. After a given partnership is launched, the Director will be responsible for the maintenance and monitoring of the initiative to ensure it drives value for the company. The Director role requires a proactive self-starter with a knack for deal-making, expertise on the evolving digital media and consumer technology ecosystems, and a strong ability to manage multiple projects with multiple stakeholders. This position will report to the Vice President of Operations for Newsweek Daily Beast.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Revenue/Traffic Growth Strategy & Pipeline Development

a. Create and update diverse set of potential ancillary revenue/traffic streams
b. Craft strategy for prioritizing these revenue/traffic streams based on (i) emerging market trends, (ii) size of the opportunity, (iii) fit with Newsweek Daily Beast’s strategic goals, and (iv) other relevant factors
c. Build out and act on prioritized pipeline of top potential partners
d. Replicate and scale as many partnerships as possible within key revenue/traffic streams
2. Partner Development and Project Management
a. Understand deal objectives and structure
b. Build models as necessary
c. Coordinate key internal and external stakeholders
d. Work with internal stakeholders to ensure deal is successful
e. Perform competitive research on partnership opportunities and impacts
f. Understand how individual deals support and impact overall corporate and business unit strategy
3. Partner Relations
a. Act as day-to-day liaison
b. Address any partner needs
c. Ensure continuous communication between parties
4. Analysis & Reporting
a. Understand reporting needs of deal
b. Work with analytics lead to set up reporting
c. Run any financials necessary
d. Understand and track drivers of deal success
5. Identify new digital media trends and disseminate information to stakeholders
a. Contribute to industry and functional research efforts
b. Generate ideas on how to grow visitors, increase visit frequency, and engagement
c. Share findings and initial recommendations through reports and presentations
d. Understand engine optimization, social media promotion, cross-platform mobile/portable device product marketing and more
6. Vendor and Partner Screening
a. Stay immersed in evolved digital media and consumer technology industry trends
b. Network and screen relevant and interesting vendors and startups on a regular basis











Requirements

  • 5+ Years of digital media experience, preferably with some portion at a digital media startup
  • Strong communication, presentation, and excel skills
  • Motivated self-starter, but also a team player
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Experience assessing, developing, negotiating and managing partnerships and business relationships
  • Experience building financial projections and modeling
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and work with various constituents
  • Results driven, energetic, creative and hardworking, with a reputation for “getting things done”
  • Strong connections in digital publishing, marketing, and eCommerce preferred
  • Experience in digital business development and / or digital marketing preferred
  • BA/BS degree required (MBA or JD preferred)
  • Ability to excel in a fast paced, entrepreneurial environment
