Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is seeking an experienced communications professional to serve as Director of Health Media, leading the development and implementation of media strategies to promote Planned Parenthood as the nation's leading provider of reproductive and sexual health and education and to help advance programmatic health and education work. The Director will work directly with a range of journalists and collaborate closely with Planned Parenthood medical affairs,education, and affiliate staff.

The Director will report to the National Media Director, and work closely with the Director of Advocacy Media in Washington. As needed, the Director will brief the President and other senior staff on matters relating to health media, and will forge close working partnerships with staff inside and outside of the Communications division.

Duties and Responsibilities

*Develop strategy and messaging to promote Planned Parenthood's role as a leading health care provider and educator through the media.
*Serve as primary contact with relevant reporters, speaking on the record and extensive communications on background.
*Strengthen relationships with journalists and media organizations to promote PPFA as the leading sexual and reproductive health provider and educator.
*Work with the Director of Advocacy Media to provide messaging and tools for congressional, administration, and agency staff for press outreach on issues related to health care and education.
*Work closely with senior staff in Medical Affairs, Education and affiliates to influence messaging and strategy within PPFA and among partners.
*Remain current on relevant medical research studies and new data in the field, and develop strategies for using these opportunities to advance PPFA's health and education goals
*Develop media strategies to promote PPFA-generated medical research.
Manage rapid response through all relevant media channels,including through close collaboration with *Planned Parenthood's digital division to utilize digital media tools for rapid response.
*Write or edit of press releases, media statements,talking points, pitch and query letters and fact checking for national media and to assist affiliates with regional advocacy media.
*Brief the President of PPFA {and other spokespeople) and write comprehensive memos on issues of health care and sex education for media engagements.
*Directly implement strategies, and also work closely with other Communications staff,including *Press Officers and Staff Writers, who will be assigned to provide assistance.
*Manage development of core communications materials for affiliates, including toolkits and template materials on health and education issues. Analyze and assess state communications to draw connections and elevate issues to a national audience as needed.
*Provide information and guidance to PPFA national staff and affiliates on media-related issues to ensure understanding of current and developing public policy positions and initiatives.
Complete special projects as needed.

Key Selection Criteria

*10 years of directly related work experience
*Minimum education requirement of Bachelor's degree
*Significant key relationships with media and press officers nationally in the fields of health care and sex education.
*Ability to develop thoughtful pieces for long-lead outlets as well as respond quickly to current events.
*Superb writing and editing skills, including the ability to carefully target messaging and quickly turn around materials
*Direct experience leading and implementing health care message strategy
*Strong ability to advise senior staff on communications messaging
*Deep understanding of health and education and the ability to distill complicated issues for messaging to multiple audiences
*Successful experience in challenging, controversial media campaigns
*Fluency in digital media strategy and tools
*Ability to travel up to 10-20%
