PublicAffairs is seeking an Editorial/Publicity assistant to work closely with the Publicity and Editorial departments, as well as offer support to other departments within the organization as needed. The position reports to the Director of Publicity and the Editorial Director. The Editorial/Publicity assistant will see all aspects of the book publishing process and work on fast-paced, dynamic publishing campaigns from start to finish.

Responsibilities include:

Assist Editorial team:
•Log, prepare, transmit and maintain files on in-coming manuscripts through all stages of production and publication.
•Correspond with authors and agents as needed.
•Generate catalog and jacket copy.
•Solicit pre-publication blurbs.
•Draft and facilitate contracts.
•Secure text and art permissions as needed.
•Prepare competitive analysis for acquisitions.
•Generate and track check requests and other forms.

Assist Publicity team:
•The ideal candidate would have some publicity experience (writing press releases; pitching and booking media interviews and reviews; facilitating lectures and signings) and a desire to work with authors on promoting their books
•Maintain data systems and media lists.
•Submit books to organizations for awards and other prizes.
•Book travel for authors as needed.

Other duties:
•Assist in finding, interviewing, and coordinating work schedules for PublicAffairs’ interns.

Required Background:
•A college degree or equivalent.
•Some postgraduate study or prior publishing or related experience is a plus (experience in the publishing industry is preferred).
•A strong interest in both the editorial and publicity departments.
•Familiarity with contemporary non-fiction.
•Familiarity with radio and television talk, variety, and news shows, as well as print and online publications.
•Must be deadline-oriented, organized and have excellent time management skills.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
•The ability to be flexible, multi-task and work autonomously.
•Rigorous attention to detail.
•Must be personable and energetic.
•Must be able to develop strong working relationships both inside and outside of the company.
•Excellent command of Microsoft Office programs—including Excel.
