Hanley Wood,, currently has an opportunity in our Los Angeles, CA office for Senior Editor, Retail. The Senior Editor, Retail will be a part of the Hanley Wood Pool Group and ancillary services. The Senior Editor, Retail will research, analyze, report and write authoritatively on issues related to the swimming pool and hot tub industry. This individual will assist in the broader development of magazine projects including theme issues and special reports. An ideal candidates strengths will lie in well-reported content, use of digital platforms, organizational and project executional skills, and the ability to cultivate a network of sources.

Major Responsibilities:

Feature and news writing - Research, write and obtain art for two in-depth feature articles each month and 3-5 news stories each month. Responsible for:

•Developing relationships with members of the pool and spa industry, especially retailers.
•Developing article ideas and detailed proposals.
•Researching assigned stories, including interviewing industry sources.
•Writing compelling feature and news stories on deadline.
•Developing potential photo/illustration ideas.

Assist in the development and execution of theme issues, and special reports. Responsible for:
•Identify new editorial topics that have the potential to enhance the magazine’s reputation in the market.
•Serve as a coordinator in developing selected projects.
•Compile information for publications’ e-newsletters.

Online content—this may include blogging, social media, posting content online, participating in enewsletters and gaining audience engagement. Responsible for:
•Writing one blog per week
•Identifying and working with one blogger from the pool and spa industry
•Posting content in all social media platforms daily
•Developing ideas to grow our presence online
•Participating in the content-creation and development of enewsletters

General responsibilities include:
•Representing the publication in a professional manner.
•Ability to travel several times per year to attend major industry events and build relationships with key contacts.
•Visiting retail professionals in the pool and spa industry in their showroom

Frequency and Methods of Evaluation and Feedback
•Ongoing meetings with Editor to discuss story development.
•Annual review program to discuss job performance and goals for upcoming year.

Performance Measures
•Ability to regularly produce original stories.
•Ability to write clearly, and offer fresh insights supported by evidence.
•Consistently meets deadlines
•Conducts oneself professionally and with honesty and integrity
•Ability to take on increasing editorial responsibility’

Minimum Requirements
•BA/BS degree in Journalism, Communications, English or related field
•Ability to conduct in-depth research and find pertinent reports that lend credibility and context to news and feature stories.
•At least two years of relevant work experience
•High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
•Knowledge of HTML, Photoshop, InCopy and CMS systems helpful, but not required
