The McClatchy Company is seeking a full-time Tablet Editor. As the key content editor, the tablet editor oversees creation, selection and production of content for a curated tablet-only section of McClatchy’s tablet applications, called the Daily Magazine. In this function, the editor works with McClatchy’s DC Bureau and McClatchy’s community newspapers, in addition to curating content from various wire services.

The editor provides vision for how this section will evolve, relying on various test and learn methodologies and consults with McClatchy’s other tablet editors helping to develop a company-wide tablet content strategy and drive innovation in digital story-telling. In addition, the tablet editor monitors traffic data and mobile trends; responds to reader behavior; and suggests engaging stories for the tablet. The tablet editor works with the Director of Mobile Initiatives in developing tablet product road map and recommends new publishing processes.

The tablet editor would work in the publishing center at the Charlotte Observer offices reporting to the Director of Mobile Initiatives and working closely with the Director of the Charlotte publishing center, the Washington Bureau and the other individual McClatchy newsrooms.


> College degree. Journalist with high level of editing experience at a newspaper, magazine, or national website – handling national, international, investigative, in-depth coverage – and hands-on digital editing experience. Five years experience preferred.

> The successful candidate will be a heavy “tablet” user and reader with a strong understanding of the expectations of the new audience on these devices.

> Must have a deep understanding of online analytics and a vision for the future of journalism vis-à-vis tablets and digital story-telling. This position requires the ability to juggle multiple tasks with accuracy and efficiency as well as the ability to work well with all levels of staff from correspondents and editors to publishers at multiple papers and the Washington Bureau.

> Creative and excellent interpersonal, communication, problem solving, and organizational skills required.
