Position Overview:

StoryCorps’ Marketing & Communications Department is a fast-paced, creative, and highly collaborative team that promotes StoryCorps’ content, programs, products, and services to print, broadcast, and online media outlets; creates marketing collateral; and manages an annual campaign for StoryCorps’ National Day of Listening. The Department’s goal is to develop and expand the StoryCorps brand, marketing the organization as worthy of general public interest, press attention, and financial support. A successful marketing and communications function is critical to StoryCorps’ long-term vision: to touch the lives of every American family.

The Associate Manager, Program Promotion, works directly with the Associate Director, Marketing & Communications and StoryCorps Department Managers to develop and expand the StoryCorps brand and market the organization’s programs, initiatives, and revenue-generating services through effective media relations. S/he will write press releases, media advisories, and online promotional campaigns, and will manage relationships and communications with media contacts.

The Associate Manager, Program Promotion reports to the Associate Director of Marketing & Communications and supervises two staff: the Senior Coordinator, Marketing & Communications (Program Promotion), who specializes in promoting StoryCorps’ Booths and interview venues, and the Senior Coordinator, Marketing & Communications (Graphic Design), who manages the content and design of the StoryCorps websites, and designs all print and digital marketing collateral.

StoryCorps records, shares, and preserves stories from a diverse range of American voices — from our Griot Initiative to preserve stories of African Americans, to our Historias Initiative to collect the experiences of Latinos. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

•Ensure annual plans for promotion of all programs, initiatives, and revenue generating services are created and successfully implemented; hold quarterly check-ins with managers to monitor progress and adjust plans as needed. Assigned programs include: StoryBooths, MobileBooth, StoryCorps Legacy, all Initiatives (e.g., the Military Voices Initiative), StoryCorpsU, and Business Development
•Ensure that promotions for StoryCorps’ programs and initiatives regularly and effectively reach and accommodate the language needs of diverse communities
•Supervise the Senior Coordinator, Marketing & Communications (Graphic Design), ensuring the graphic design and marketing materials needs of all StoryCorps departments are met in a timely manner; ensure the quality and consistency of all marketing collateral
•Supervise the Senior Coordinator, Marketing & Communications (Program Promotion), ensuring outcomes for promotion of assigned departments (StoryBooths, MobileBooths, and others) are achieved
•Collaborate with External Relations staff on National Day of Listening media campaign, working with internal and external partners to coordinate successful, measurable media hits and placements
•Build media lists and cultivate contacts using Cision MediaSource; maintain database of press clips
•Work collaboratively with the Web team to assist in the updating of the various StoryCorps websites, when necessary
•Manage production of press kits and maintain inventory of marketing collateral, with support from the Marketing & Communications Senior Coordinator
•Prepare regular reports on Marketing & Communications Department activities for StoryCorps’ Executive Team and interdepartmental staff
•Perform other tasks to support StoryCorps’ External Relations function, as assigned


Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:

Required:

•Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in a related field
•3 - 5 years experience in media relations, communications, or a related field
•Demonstrated experience in developing marketing and communications strategies, managing those strategies, and producing results
•Experience coordinating media events
•Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
•Solid organization skills, multi-tasking ability, and attention to detail
•Ability to be flexible and adaptable in order to contribute to problem-solving activities within a growing, changing organization
•Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), email, and database software
•Working knowledge of social networking technologies and marketing strategies
•Experience working with mail shops, designers, writers, and printers
•Cultural competence and the ability to work successfully with diverse groups of people

Preferred:
•Basic HTML (blog level) proficiency
•Proficiency on a Mac platform
•Experience providing staff supervision and evaluation
•Spanish language fluency (orally and in writing)
