Job Description
AJWS’s communications department is seeking a talented writer and editor with experience in the field of international development to join our publications division as a communications associate. The communications associate will report to AJWS’s director of publications and editorial services and will be responsible for producing and assisting with a variety of internal and external publications to support an ambitious national communications program. Projects will include print publications, such as annual reports, AJWS’s magazine, brochures, policy papers, invitations, and reports to AJWS’s board of directors; as well as online and opinion-based content, including blog posts and op-eds. The communications associate will serve as managing editor of AJWS’s blog, Global Voices, and will be responsible for developing and populating a story bank of well-researched and well-written stories about AJWS’s work and impact, to be used by staff throughout the organization.

The communications associate will also provide editorial support (copy editing and proofreading) to other AJWS divisions throughout the organization. • Writing for and curating AJWS’s blog, Global Voices
  • Developing and maintaining AJWS’s story bank to capture compelling stories about AJWS’s grantees and domestic advocacy efforts
  • Editing content written by other AJWS divisions to ensure quality and consistency with the organization’s editorial style
  • Compiling a quarterly report to the board of trustees summarizing the organization’s progress toward its strategic goals
  • Writing stories and articles highlighting AJWS’s grantees and programs
  • Following and implementing the guidelines in AJWS’s style guide and serving as a “help desk” resource for all staff inquiries about grammar, punctuation and writing style

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree—ideally with an emphasis on communications, English or marketing
  • 3 + years’ experience as a writer/editor of a variety of print and online materials
  • 1+ years’ experience working in the international development field (or equivalent knowledge of human rights via education or significant volunteer/travel experience in the developing world
  • Experience writing and/or managing a blog and drafting opinion-based content
  • Lively and succinct writing style and the ability to adapt personal style to an institutional “voice”
  • Meticulous copy editing and proofreading skills and the ability to efficiently edit and improve the quality of content written by staff on diverse topics
  • The ability to balance multiple projects, meet deadlines and produce consistent, high-quality work in a fast-paced environment
  • The ability to respond to edits from multiple sources, incorporating feedback while maintaining the integrity and fluidity of a text
  • Familiarity with AP style
  • Knowledge of Jewish and social justice issues (preferred but not required)

How to Apply:

Please send a cover letter, resume (including references) and 1-2 writing samples (text that has not had the benefit of an editor other than yourself) to opportunities@ajws.org.
