Editorial Director (Buffalo, NY)

Leading publisher of K-12 educational books located in Buffalo, NY, seeks an innovative professional to lead its growing editorial team. The Editorial Director is responsible for managing the day-to-day tasks of an editorial team of four, developing a list of approximately 200 titles per year, and assisting the publisher in strategic planning.

- Recruit freelance authors and book packagers within the framework of the project budget
- Supervise the editorial process and work with editorial staff to maintain deadlines and timely handoffs.
- Edit a small portion of list
- Lead weekly editorial meetings and participate in monthly creative director meetings
- Attend industry conferences and visit with publishing partners as needed.
- Present new and updated products to the sales departments and vendors as requested
- Collaborate with sales reps, custom publishing, licensing, and other internal publishing divisions to coordinate the most effective and strategic publishing plans
- Hire and provide ongoing development and supervision of editorial staff to ensure best deployment and retention of employees. Invest and nurture staff in order to maximize the talents of each team member.
- Develop and manage the expense budget for editorial. Ensure appropriate editorial departmental expenses remain within budget.
- Manage and control author fees, book packager costs, and plant costs in accordance with strategic plan and individual project P&Ls.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Bachelor's degree in English
- Familiarity with the school and library market
- Ability to work in a team setting with mutual accountability
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; public speaking experience a plus
- Ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects with flexibility, and meet deadlines
- Computer skills and facility to work with digital applications and databases
- Ability to negotiate win/win agreements
- Ability to digest and use sales reports
- Decisive, confident, and organized
- Creative and innovative
- Takes initiative, willing to take appropriate risks
- Strong interpersonal skills
