The web designer and developer will help colleagues in Resource Development achieve their fundraising goals by providing web design and front-end web development expertise. The web designer and developer will be equally comfortable working in the design and programming of high-quality, compelling, and customized digital applications for the projects produced by the RD Communications department. Working with the graphic designers, Art Director, and communications colleagues, as necessary, the designer/developer will assist in creating and producing a wide range of materials for multimedia applications, such as websites, HTML emails, apps, and presentations.

•Work closely with the internal design, web and technology staff to develop forward-thinking digital solutions for integrated marketing efforts for events, initiatives, and campaigns that engage the audience and convey the intended message.
•Work with the Art Director to determine how best to integrate new media strategies into MIT’s overall communications goals.
•Establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with staff in communications and other Resource Development offices.
•Independently code and design web development projects as needed, including testing, evaluating cross-platform performance, usability, and accessibility.
•Evaluate and organize RD Intranet with a special consideration to campaign materials
•Research and implement new and more targeted web analytics and reporting.
•Working with graphic designers and developers, play an integral role in creating mobile apps for internal and external audiences.
•Maintenance and improvements on ~10 websites (including major sites like Giving, Spectrum, CDC, Global Initiatives, insideRD, Foundations, Family Philanthropy)
•Publishing of online version of Spectrum (3 times/year)
•Documentation and training for staff maintaining content on web sites when necessary.

Undergraduate degree in graphic design, web design, or related field. 4 or more years experience in digital design and development, electronic communications, and/or digital production. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail with an ability to multitask and meet aggressive deadlines. Experience working within the development cycle for complex web initiatives. Must be a well-rounded communicator who is able to converse and collaborate equally well with management, designers, writers, technologists, and other colleagues within Resource Development to meet goals and objectives. Must be flexible, open to new ideas, and passionate about designing and building digital solutions. Ability to work independently and as part of a team required. Experience in higher education, advancement, resource development, creative agencies, or journalistic enterprises a plus.

•Knowledge of and experience with the following web technologies and applications: HTML5, CSS, Javascript, JQuery, and PHP and database concepts, Apache web server, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Dreamweaver, MS Word, and PowerPoint in a Mac environment.
•Experience with the following: implementing web-based content management systems (Wordpress, Drupal, Expression Engine), interactive charts and graphs, blogging, wikis, social media, web analytics, mobile and responsive design, HTML emails and marketing communications, user interface best practices, browser compatibility, and accessibility standards.
•Experience designing mobile apps.
•Solid and current design skills in addition to technical skills.
•Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
•Understanding of database concepts, SQL, and the implications of different database designs.
•Ability to create and modify sitemaps and wireframes.
•Experience with online video, Final Cut, After Effects welcomed.
