Reporting to the Publisher for the Press, the Associate Publisher is responsible for the profitable and effective daily operations of HBR Press. The Associate Publisher provides oversight of integrated global retail/etail sales and distribution, marketing, as well as management of ongoing analytics and reporting on key performance metrics. The Associate Publisher develops and guides the priorities and trade-offs of the Press management team as the business model further evolves from print/distributed to more digital/direct.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Aligning the Press’ operational efforts with the Press’ strategic priorities
•Works with the Press commercial management team to communicate and reinforce strategic priorities, provides guidance in bridging strategy and execution through coordinated management decisions and actions
•Ensures that resource allocation and priorities support the evolving business model from print/distributed to digital/direct
•Brings deep knowledge of Press and HBR customers into consideration when participating in acquisition, content positioning, and launch planning discussions
•Direct reports include Director, Marketing Communications, Director, Domestic Sales and Director, International Sales and Marketing
Leading the integration of a global retail/etail strategy for Press books and ebooks
•Partners with Sales Directors to develop and lead the execution of an overall Press sales strategy for major channels in print & digital formats
oIntegrates retail, e-tail, direct and HBR platform planning into a cohesive market plan for distribution
oPartners with Sales Directors to set seasonal and annual sales targets by list, by channel, and by title; measures performance against targets and ensures prioritization and appropriate allocation of resources ( title focus, brand merchandising, direct efforts) to profitably maximize revenues and support digital direct model capabilities
•Engages regularly with Perseus Distribution Services’ business directors to communicate priorities, monitor progress, and conduct business and key account reviews
•Oversees Constellation e-book distribution relationship for HBRP, ensuring that Perseus onboards and supports our priority e-tailers and reporting is timely and accurate
•Engages regularly with HBR Press India team to share information and coordinate efforts
•With Sales Directors, plans for annual contract reviews and negotiations with Amazon accounts (except Amazon.in) and major e-book platforms (iBooks, Google, Amazon/Kindle, BN/Nook); approves final agreements with direct accounts
•Collaborates with Sales Directors and Press Marketing Communications Manager to track performance and sustain management of a highly targeted footprint of HBR’s branded presence (spinners and boutiques) at retail and travel outlets
•Manages Domestic and International Sales Directors as direct reports: gives feedback on and supports their individual performance and professional development; meets with them regularly to provide guidance as they work towards performance milestones

Providing management oversight of Press marketing’s evolving capabilities:
•Partners with the Press Marketing Communications Director to evolve Press marketing’s capabilities and focus so they are optimized for digital and author network/direct campaigns. This includes:
•Re-evaluating marketing processes and schedules designed for retail to make room for continuous digital and direct publishing support.
•Enhancing digital marketing strategies and tactics that support physical and e-book sales through e-tail and digital direct channels.
•Designing and implementing an author promotion and social media training program to fully leverage author networks and direct engagement with authors’ communities to drive book sales as part of Press’ direct model
•Advising on list planning as it affects the team’s ability to meet monthly revenue targets and transition to a continuous publishing schedule

Monitoring and interpreting analytics for Press’ key performance metrics and partnering with Director of Business Planning & Analysis to produce regular management reports
•Tracks Press’ market share and sales trends in key channels (Amazon, B&N, WH Smith, Hudson, iTunes) to gauge our market performance as well as shifts in market structure; monitors ‘source of revenue’ mix to ensure that it reflects the strategic priorities in our evolving business model
•Initiates periodic competitive analysis for branded lines as well as our top publishing categories for authored titles to measure our performance against other market leaders
•Partners with Director of Business Planning & Analysis to produce monthly unit review report for Press

REQUIREMENTS:
•B.A. required
•10+ years relevant experience with an operational or senior sales role in a digital media company
•Direct experience with major etailers and digital media platforms such as Amazon, Apple, Google
•Experience managing senior teams
•Strong analytic skills
•Strategic thinker and planner
•Excellent communicator
•Ability to work with evolving business models, comfortable driving organizational change
