Position Description: The Copy Chief ensures that our books and bookazines are factually and grammatically correct, and maintains the established voice and style of our brands. Duties:•Manage copy-editing and reporting freelancers, operations, payroll and budget.•Ensure that every page of our books are copy-edited, checked and proofread. •Work with the production, art, photo and editorial departments to meet deadlines and ensure stories come together cohesively.•Track copy-flow through all phases of production so that closes are smooth and efficient.•Recommend, recruit, supervise, and edit freelance copy editors, reporters and other freelance personnel as needed.•Build a house style guide for ?TIME Books, in consultation with the magazine brand.•Perform senior-editor role in certain cases, which may include line editing and writing all headlines, captions and other display copy. Requirements:A college degree and minimum 5-7 years’ experience in a similar role at a major consumer magazine or publishing house is required. We’re seeking an intelligent wordsmith with an innate feel for language and the rules of style and grammar; exceptional management, communication and organizational skills; a high degree of flexibility and focus; strong technical skills in InCopy/InDesign systems; and a strong eye for detail as well as a sense of the big picture. The ability to manage a large volume of copy under tight deadlines in a fast-paced and quality-focused environment is essential.
