We're looking for an Associate Editor to join our award-winning editorial team at The Praetorian Group, which operates the leading news and information websites for U.S. first responders. The position is with and, which deliver news, commentary, video and training content to firefighters and paramedics.

This is a great opportunity for someone to take the reins and impact the editorial direction of two thriving sites, with a lot of freedom and room to operate. The ideal candidate has a strong background in a news environment (online preferred), a creative and experimental mindset for developing new content features, and a high attention to detail in editing and writing. Experience in public safety is a plus, but not required.

You'll work closely with our team of columnists and industry advisors to construct and manage an editorial agenda, generating great content and gaining a strong understanding of how our readers interact with our site. We want someone who is creative, organized, levelheaded and, well, fun - the four tenets of our team. Skill with Photoshopping coworkers heads onto other people's bodies is a close fifth.

This position presents a unique opportunity to grow within a strong, creative editorial department that is on the forefront of b2b online media, including a collective network of almost 800,000 Facebook fans.

Job Responsibilities:

- Assist in managing overall editorial direction of websites
- Creatively drive improvements to editorial features on websites
- Develop new regular article series
- Analyze and make regular determinations based on traffic analytics
- Manage flow of news content on websites
- Copy edit columns and original site content
- Regularly write articles for websites
- Oversee production of tri-weekly member eNewsletters, as well as specialty eNewsletters
- Occasional travel opportunities to cover industry trade shows
- Monitor public safety industry trends and technology

And the usuals...

- A bachelor's degree in Journalism or significant Journalism experience
- Practical editorial experience in an online or print editorial role (min. 3-5 years)
- A sharp editorial eye and exceptional attention to detail
- Ability to identify industry trends and generate coverage to address them
- Command of AP Style, including headline and caption writing
- Regular writing/reporting experience
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- A working knowledge of HTML
- Solid understanding of and interest in online technologies that support online media
- Public safety experience a big plus
