Director of Community Media
BRIC is seeking to fill the position of Director of Community Media. The Director of Community Media will be a member of the senior management team at BRIC.BRIC presents art and media programs that reflect Brooklyn's creativity and diversity, and provides resources to launch, nurture and showcase artists and media makers. All of BRIC's offerings are free or low cost, to advance access to and understanding of arts and media. BRIC is the community access television organization for Brooklyn. As such, we offer residents free access to media production facilities and equipment and low-cost media education. On a network of four cable channels (to be expanded to 5 in Fall 2013), BRIC produces Brooklyn Independent Television (curated video content focused on Brooklyn); Brooklyn Free Speech TV (community-produced video content); and Brooklyn Bulletin Board (a 24/7 looping announcement service used by Brooklyn non-profits). After adoption of a new strategic plan for its community media operations, BRIC is implementing a major expansion of its offerings in media, including development of a new digital platform to augment its Brooklyn cable network, offering education and free video production equipment check-out in locations throughout the Borough, launching a grant program for Brooklyn non-profits to create video about their work, re-branding and expanding the network, and exponentially growing the Brooklyn Independent initiative via new partnerships, a daily show, and new approaches to developing content.BRIC is also in the process of constructing BRIC House, a 40,000SF arts and media facility which will open in Fall 2013. BRIC House will house BRIC's media, performing arts, and contemporary arts programs under one roof, and (among other things) will include one new and two fully renovated television studios, as well as media classroom space and upgraded facilities for Brooklyn Free Speech TV producers. BRIC is now seeking a new Director of Community Media, to lead the team charged with implementing the media expansion plan and continuing current services.Purpose of Position: Working closely with BRIC's President and Executive Vice President, the Director of Community Media advances implementation of the Board-adopted strategic plan for community media and maximize the effectiveness of BRIC's work in community media. He or she will also provide executive management for all BRIC Community Media operations, including leading a team of Associate Directors overseeing Free Speech Services, Content, Technology, and Partnerships. In addition, the Director of Community Media will collaborate with BRIC's Director of Marketing to maximize the effectiveness of Community Media Marketing activities and undertake and utilize market research. Essential Duties & Responsibilities-Working closely with BRIC's President and Executive Vice President, oversee implementation of strategic initiatives and determination of operational priorities, coordinate initiatives among staff.-Support and guide the team directly charged with creating a re-launched television/digital video network for Brooklyn.-Support and guide the team directly charged with greatly expanding the impact of BRIC's Brooklyn Free Speech services.-Oversee assessment of and reporting on community media programs to ensure that resources are used most effectively.-Oversee preparation of operating and capital budgets, approve expenditures and monitor budget-to-actual.-Work collaboratively with other BRIC program areas on cross-disciplinary programming initiatives.-Along with BRIC's President, serve as public representative for the organization's community media programs, including interface with elected officials and other stakeholders.-Develop plans for increasing revenue base.-Serve as member of BRIC's Senior Management team; assist in planning organization-wide initiatives and policies; participate in reporting to Board of Directors.Education/Experience-Graduate degree in a related field.-At least 5 years' experience in an executive leadership position, ideally in a growing organization.-Experience with a mission-based organization, team building, and change management.Skills Required-Knowledge of and commitment to Brooklyn and its diverse populace.-Knowledge of the local and digital media landscape.-Familiarity with television and digital distribution technologies.-Familiarity with video production.-Excellent communication, analytic and business skills; adept at team building.Compensation & ScheduleCompetitive salary and benefits.
