The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) seeks a creative and talented Scientific Technical Illustrator to join the Science Graphics and Layout Department.

Major duties and responsibilities:

• Create highly sophisticated technical illustrations and animations to accompany manuscripts ensuring scientific accuracy
• Perform research needed for various illustrations to appear in Science, Science Signaling, and Science Translational Medicine, including the solicitation of illustrative material
• Communicate with Preflight and Online departments regarding the high-end output of illustrations
• Generate monthly reports to the Art Director regarding status of current and future projects
• Supervise illustration freelancers; may train Art Department staff in illustration programs
• May prepare samples, proposed designs, and layouts
• Serve as a backup for other art department positions

Minimum qualifications:

• Extensive university or college-level training leading to a Bachelor’s degree in a field of graphic design, medical illustration, or illustration along with undergraduate level science courses
• Two to three years graphic arts experience creating illustrations and animations
• Proven ability to create sophisticated, high quality visuals
• Strong technology skills in contemporary software packages , particularly the ability to operate a Mac-based platform
• Ability to juggle multiple projects concurrently
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Superb organizational skills and an ability to work under deadline pressure
• Ability to apply innovative solutions to unprecedented problems when they occur
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office and multi-media skills are a plus
