The nation’s leading source of healthcare business news is looking for an experienced researcher and policy analyst with a sophisticated understanding of the full range of healthcare-related industries. Candidates with superior writing skills capable of producing editorial products based on his or her original research will be given special consideration.

This person, who reports to the magazine’s editor, will be responsible for generating original research for regular reports, analyses, issue briefs and white papers for our primary audience of C-suite executives in the hospital, physician practice, ambulatory care, skilled nursing facility, health insurance and other health-related industries. Working closely with research staff, the senior research analyst will also be responsible for improving the quality of existing data published in the magazine and online and will work with the editorial staff to produce investigative reports and in-depth feature articles.

Duties include:

• Conceptualizing, designing and executing research projects that provide cutting-edge analyses on important healthcare-related topics;
• Overseeing the capture, warehousing and manipulation of multiple datasets, using both publicly available data and information received from external groups such as trade associations, non-profit organizations and private businesses;
• Helping design and improve multiple survey instruments that can generate original data series and provide newsworthy results;
• Ideally, writing original editorial products based on that research that add value and are easily understood by a busy C-suite audience as well as policymakers and the broader public;
• In selected cases, identifying and overseeing freelance researchers, policy analysts or reporters to write reports or other editorial products based on Modern Healthcare’s original research;
• Maintaining a broad knowledge of healthcare-related fields by participating in relevant conferences and seminars and by maintaining a network of contacts in the journalism, public policy and private consulting fields doing similar work.


The position requires at least 10 years research experience in healthcare-related fields and, ideally, at least 3 to 5 years conducting and writing original research reports or other information-driven editorial products.

It also requires:
• An in-depth knowledge of contemporary healthcare issues
• An engagement with the relevant healthcare management, economic, medical and/or healthcare policy literature
• The ability to anticipate the issues that will becoming pressing months in advance and execute projects ahead of the curve
• Excellent research and analytical skills
• The ability to build, use and manage a relational database using software tools like SAS or Access
• The ability to write serviceable prose
• A demonstrated ability to manage and execute multiple projects simultaneously
• The willingness to actively engage in a fast-paced journalism environment, which requires strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative work style
• Education: at least a masters degree in a relevant field
