In-House Title: Editorial Director

The Office of University Communications (UC) is responsible for providing strategic leadership for university-wide communications, including internal communications, branding, marketing and creative design, and media relations for the University at Buffalo. The Office is highly visible and its communication work products are the public face of the university for many audiences. The Office produces approximately 125 projects each year. The goal of UC is to integrate communications disciplines and provide a strategic leadership role for communications across the entire university, calling for a continual need to improve efficiency and effectiveness in the organization. The Editorial Director is responsible for providing daily leadership and guidance for editorial staff. He/she must be experienced in direct supervision of writers (appraisals, programs, coaching, mentoring), be effective in motivating staff through change, and be adept at collaborating with others. This individual will work collaboratively with the Assistant VP for Marketing, Web, and Creative Communications, Creative Director and Visual Communications Team, and Content Strategist, as well as with the UC Media Relations team, to devise, craft, and implement strategic communications initiatives and processes to enhance and elevate the integrity of the UB brand. The Editorial Director’s primary task is to oversee and provide strategic leadership for writers, editors, copy editors/proof readers and student writers within the Office of University Communications. These individuals develop editorial content as part of the Editorial Team. The Director will also have the responsibility of creating, maintaining, and managing editorial freelance portfolios. She/He oversees development of editorial content that drives UB’s strategic messaging, supports major university initiatives, and is aligned with the UB’s brand and position. He/She is accountable for editorial planning and for assuring that deadlines are met. He/She assures the quality of editorial content in the messages and products created in University Communications for a wide range of audiences, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, elected officials, friends of the university, and the public-at-large. The Director serves as “managing editor” for many of the external and internal communications tools/products stewarded by University Communications. Editorial duties include planning content, overseeing composition and implementation, and using data and reader feedback to evaluate and improve content. The publications/products for which the Director is responsible include the UB Today magazine, as well as Web content, copy in support of internal and external communications, and other editorial and marketing copy created by University Communications. He/She will also need to be adept at identifying, aggregating and enhancing content that comes from sources across the university, in order to tell UB’s story in a compelling fashion across a myriad of distribution channels. Close collaboration with University Communications’ Media Relations staff to provide support and devise tactics for additional content distribution/syndication will be essential. The Director will also need to work closely with the Project Operations Team to follow office workflow and procedures, and will be responsible for ensuring staff adhere to the same standards. The Editorial Director will actively participate in the writing and editing of content for the multiple products created and stewarded by University Communications. He/She will lead the assessment of the effectiveness of the communication products he/she oversees, create reports for senior management, develop strategies for improvement based on those measures and guide staff in making necessary changes. MINIMUM EDUCATION Master’s degree, or bachelor’s and 5 years of full-time work experience in an editorial leadership role in journalism, public relations, organizational communications or a related field EXPERIENCE The Editorial Director will possess a minimum of 10 years full-time experience as a professional communicator, with at least five years supervising writers. Higher education experience is preferred.
