Hanley Wood Business Media seeks an editorial leader who is capable of formulating strategy at 30,000 feet while overseeing day-to-day operations at ground level for its Pool Group, which includes two best-of-breed B2B publications based in Los Angeles.

The ideal candidate will be a digitally savvy leader who also excels at producing print products. Other critical traits include superb writing, editing and communication skills, ability to meet deadlines, experience managing budgets and a sense of humor. Knowledge of the pool and spa industry is highly desired.

The editorial director will manage a team of six journalists to produce the interactive and print products associated with two key brands: Pool & Spa News and Aquatics International.

Major Responsibilities

Strategic

-Work with Hanley Wood’s president/content to leverage corporate resources and ensure the Pool Group in in sync with the company’s digital first initiatives.
-Mentor staff
-Assess competition and ensure Pool Group products are positioned to retain and extend their leadership position in the industries they serve
-Grow digital audience and increase engagement
-Develop annual editorial calendar

Operational

-Meet deadlines and produce compelling news and information for Pool Group audiences.
-Edit copy, manage free-lancers, engage in social media and participate in industry events.
-Produce highly engaging email newsletters that continue the Pool Group’s tradition of leading Hanley Wood Business Media in open and click-through rates.
-Keep operating expenses within budget.
-Direct the flow of content across all brand platforms as the magazines move from a print-centric model to digital-first.
-Work with the design team to ensure photos and illustrations are aligned with editorial content.

Other

-Travel several times per year to attend industry events and build relationships with key contacts
-Become known in the industry as an authority on the top-of-mind issues facing business owners in the pool and spa market

Preferred qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Journalism, English or Communications
Minimum of 5 years of journalism experience
Minimum of 3 years of editorial management experience
