Associate Editor – The Institute

•Research and write stories covering a broad range of IEEE-related topics, including topics of a technical nature.
•Propose and write blogs on engineering-related topics.
•Edit manuscripts submitted by editorial assistant, freelance writers, and IEEE staff.
•Produce multimedia content for The Institute Online, including video pieces in collaboration with staff, podcasts, and slideshows. This includes proposing ideas for multimedia content, writing scripts, doing on-camera reporting, obtaining and editing video and audio, and assisting staff with the production of videos.
•Oversee and act as point person during production of four print issues, which involves independent decision-making responsibilities and providing direction to print production staff and the art department regarding layout and production. This includes overseeing editorial assistant's work inputting edits, and editing articles for fit and format.
•Oversee and act as point person during production of 12 online issues, which involves independent decision-making responsibilities and providing direction to online production staff. This includes assigning to the online production staff the placement of articles on the site, overseeing the editorial assistant's work inputting edits in Content Management System, reviewing articles before they are posted, making final round of edits, and ensuring articles are released on time.
•Propose stories for assigned beat areas for each issue.
•Act as the point person for the design of The Institute's online site. Work with the Publications Technology group on troubleshooting problems as well as plan for future enhancements.
•Oversee The Institute's social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
•Oversee the creation of the bimonthly e-mail newsletter. This involves providing direction to the editorial assistant for the compilation of topics in the newsletter.
•Oversee the editorial direction of the editorial assistant's writing assignments.
•Oversee and direct the general administrative duties of the editorial assistant in support of the department's operations.
•Travel to IEEE meetings held by regions, sections, societies, chapters, departments, organizational units, and IEEE Board of Directors to seek out news to report on.

•Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or English with at least 3 years of experience working in the field of journalism as a writer or editor is preferred.
•In lieu of a degree, a minimum of five years of experience in the areas of publishing, editing, or reporting.
•New writing, editing, social media and multimedia skills, online and print production skills, and interviewing skills.
•General knowledge of journalistic and editorial principles, ability to meet deadlines, and handle multiple priorities.
