POSITION OVERVIEW

The position of Commissioning Editor (CE) works as an integral part of Lonely Planet’s global commissioning team, in coordination with the Managing Editor. Commissioning Editors are accountable and responsible for identifying, commissioning and managing product strategies and authors of high-quality travel content for print, digital and mobile products, and to meet Lonely Planet’s global and regional content strategies. Individual CEs have a specific geographic area for which they are accountable, and are owners of a list of specific global and regional products; these may change according to business needs.

The Commissioning Editor is responsible for making strategic publishing decisions that maximize gross margin (GM) revenue of their regional lists. This includes maintaining market- and travel-trend knowledge, and ensuring that Lonely Planet content strategy and consumer needs inform Lonely Planet products and travel information. The CE is responsible for creative and strategic publishing input into content, managing the product process from costing through submission to Production, and for ensuring that market and financial factors are fully considered both before and during the commissioning process. Some publishing special-project work may be undertaken as well.
