Requirements Position Description:

To acquire 20+ books a year for the trade program of a global publisher in history and popular science.

Major Responsibilities:

• To acquire 20+ books in history and popular science a year
• To manage the history and science program from backlist to creating a successful front list
• Editorial planning/brainstorming - seek out new authors and book ideas: actively research ideas, topics, and people for contact for potential books.
• Author management: act as the liaison to marketing, sales, publicity, and operations for our authors.
• Serve as a project manager for each book project, coordinating delivery date, manuscript formatting, production issues, marketing concerns, and daily questions with the author and agent
• An ability to work independently on the history and science list and at the same be part of the editorial team in terms of contributing to the trade program as a whole

Required Skills / Knowledge:

• Solid editorial experience and a thorough knowledge of the publishing industry
• Knowledge of history and popular science
• Ability to evaluate manuscripts in terms of subject, audience, marketabilty, and appropriate acquisition price.
• Negotiating skills when dealing with agents
• Superior verbal and written communication skills
• Leadership and management savvy

Experience Needed:

• Minimum of five years experience in publishing trade titles
• A proven track record in acquisition in history
• A strong network of agents and authors

Educational Background Required:
• B.A. or B.S
• Graduate degree desirable but not required
