Job Description

National Journal Group of Atlantic Media seeks a highly ambitious, entrepreneurial individual to lead our events operation, called National Journal LIVE or NJ LIVE. NJ LIVE is a critical component of National Journal Group, creating and executing over 75 underwritten events per year.

The General Manager of National Journal LIVE provides leadership and guidance for events across all departments and primarily to sales/marketing.

The General Manager oversees and drives the business strategy for NJ Live, from serving as key architect of new, large event product concepts to customizing smaller, more intimate events designed to meet a client’s goals and objectives. The General Manager oversees all aspects of the events business including sponsorship outreach and revenue generation, the development of new events & programming, and the day-to-day operation of event execution (policy briefings, large-scale conferences, multi-platform programs, private dinners, receptions, etc.)

A key priority of this position is to provide thought leadership and onsite presentation support to National Journal’s business development team to realize annual, budgeted revenue goals and to ensure that all client inquiries and events are managed proactively to exceed the expectations of our sponsors.

The General Manager oversees a team of 7 and reports directly to the Chief Revenue Officer of National Journal.


Responsibilities Include:

•Build a large and profitable events business through product creation and sponsorship sales.
•Serve as key architect of new event product concepts including relevant digital and print extensions, constantly striving to look for emerging event models and innovative speakers.
•Own the revenue pipeline and yearly budget for NJ LIVE.
•Closely track prospect movement and engage with the sales team and directly with clients at each step to avoid barriers or hesitations.
•Full responsibility for defining long-term business plan, staffing and operations model, and lead on business development and partnerships.
•Create yearly event budget and NJ LIVE revenue goals, using deeply engrained knowledge of the DC market and legislative calendar.
•Create event prospect lists strongly rooted in research of who is most relevant.
•In close conjunction with marketing, create and provide suite of tools to the sales team to strengthen event products and drive energy.
•Cultivate strong relationships with senior client and prospect decision-makers.
•Provide leadership and manage daily operations for the events department including all logistics, content development and event execution. Ensure all quality and standards are met with an eye toward continuing NJ LIVE’s success as the leader of policy-centered events inside and outside the Beltway.
•Work with NJ management team to develop core event portfolio.
•Develop an annual strategic events plan and calendar, including targeted audience building and best practice sponsorship strategies.
•Serve as a key NJ LIVE liaison with internal managers, sales, marketing, membership, and editorial teams.

Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:

•Creative and strategic thinking with emphasis on customer service meeting client objectives for an event.
•Ability to forge strong relationships with clients and strategic partners.
•Entrepreneurial spirit, track record of initiative, high quality and service standard, and ownership of work.
•Proven track record in sales and a relentless approach to business development.
•Working understanding of politics and the policy community and its key players is extremely valuable.
•Talent for the development of event programming and the recruitment of high-level speakers.
•Outstanding organizational skills, excellent time management and judgment, and the ability to manage complex operations in a fast-paced environment.
•Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to manage complex and fast-changing event programming elements.
•Bachelor’s degree and five years related experience.
