Director, Business Development Strategy
The Chronicle of Higher Education seeks a dynamic Director of Business Development Strategy to identify, evaluate, and develop new business-related opportunities for Chronicle’s existing and future businesses, evaluate new business opportunities and develop strategic partnerships. Initially this position will be charged primarily with business development and strategic alliance initiatives associated with a new start-up, created and backed by The Chronicle of Higher Education, aimed at being the world’s premier destination for information about academic careers. This position reports into the Publisher and plays an important role in helping set long-term strategy while working closely with CTO, Assoc. Publisher, Sales, Assoc. Publisher, Marketing and Digital team in the strategic and tactical aspects of the role.ACCOUNTABLE FORLeading business development efforts – with a heavy emphasis on digital -- including identifying, developing, executing, and supporting strategic partnerships that will deliver significant value to the business. Related to the start-up initiative, building and growing an online community and the business partnerships associated with it. Managing the process for analyzing, implementing, and optimizing new and existing business opportunities. This includes sourcing potential deals, negotiating agreements, and in some cases, managing the resulting relationships. Establishing the company’s first-ever business development process. Laying the groundwork for the function, including identifying best practices, researching the appropriate landscape of potential partners, and sharing literacy within the organization. Key Responsibilities•Identify, shape, and plan strategies for digital growth, including social, mobile, and video, and where appropriate, other media assets.•Develop and cultivate new business relationships and strategic. partnerships that build on our existing brand, audiences, and products and services. •Identify opportunities and business models for Chronicle content to be distributed via new channels. •Analyze commercial viability, customer and competitive research and create business models. •Network with industry professionals to stay current on emerging products, technologies and businesses. •Develop comprehensive business plans that highlight the benefits of creating new partnerships. •Lead a wide range of partnering activities, including strategy, partner identification, relationship-building, deal negotiation, and ongoing partner development.•Source, structure, negotiate, and close strategic partnership deals.CORE SKILLS & ABILITIES •Strategic mindset•Excellent verbal and written communication skills•Strong analytical and financial modeling skills•Demonstrated ability to successfully negotiate deals and familiarity with common contracts•Proven track record of results-oriented performance•Proven leadership skills and ability to guide and motivate multiple and ad-hoc teams to accomplish common goals•Proven ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships and partnerships with a variety of individuals and groups across business and organizational lines•Strong organizational and project management skills•Demonstrated success in a matrixed organization•Knowledge of higher education and nonprofits preferred•Knowledge or interest in entrepreneurial opportunities, such as those in a start-up environment, is a plusEXPERIENCE5-7 years of relevant digital or integrated media experience with significant business impact/revenue generation impact.
