Rodale Trade Books is seeking an innovative, forward-thinking Creative Director to join its rapidly evolving book division. The Creative Director will oversee the visual identity of Rodale Books in print and digital formats as well as online destinations. This person will be responsible for seeing each project through the design process, including conception, approval, and production. The candidate must also have experience managing a staff and a variety of freelance designers, photographers, and illustrators.

Essential Duties:
•Direct the creative work of in-house design team and freelancers; work directly with designers, layout designers, editors, sales/marketing, and the publisher to conceptualize cover and interior designs

•Execute a broad range of designs suitable for trade, direct-mail, and branded books, including illustrated and narrative titles in the categories of health, diet, fitness, cooking, self-help, sports, gardening, environment, and more

•Manage and inspire design staff on the creation of covers and interiors for 140+ books and ancillary book products a year

•Create and oversee the development of designs that are appropriate for both physical and digital versions of books that can translate into multiple formats

•Oversee the development of enhanced digital books (e-books and apps) in conjunction with the digital team, and provide all necessary assets

•Guide the design process within the department with an eye toward a digital transformation; determine greater departmental initiatives, processes, and staff development needs; stay current on new print and digital design trends

•Determine appropriate design and photography/illustration budgets for each title and for overall department

•Work with Managing Editor to make sure key trade and direct marketing and sales dates are met

•Oversee the creation of select advertising and promotional pieces

•Run the weekly design status meetings, bi-weekly cover review meetings, and seasonal trade cover launches

• Bachelor’s degree in art/design preferred
• Minimum of 7 to 10 years experience in book publishing design required
• Knowledge of typography, illustration, and photography
• Proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator required; working knowledge of Adobe Flash and Web design software a plus
• Expertise in illustrated book design strongly preferred
• Digital design and workflow expertise strongly preferred
• Flexibility and ability to attend to details and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
