Position Summary:
The Design Director leads and supervises design projects, as well as conceptualizes and develops compelling visual elements for print, multimedia, and Web-based communications.

The Design Director is the chief creative force for the university-responsible for leading a skilled creative team and collaborating with colleagues throughout the university on visual issues, and serving as the chief enforcer of a consistent brand across the university.??The Design Director draws on a proven track record in establishing and maintaining exceptional visual “brands”(defined broadly as the personality of an organization and specifically as the graphic identity system) to lead and manage a team of graphic designers. The Design Director brings out the best in the team by providing strong design inspiration and direction, and sets the same standards and expectations in collaboration with colleagues within and outside the unit to ensure an exceptional portrayal of Northeastern that advances university business goals and marketing strategy. These include marketing and communications staff, project managers, designers, writers, information architects, videographers and photographers.??The Design Director is a talented and skilled graphic designer and a strong conceptual thinker-able to distill complexity into clarity, with a genuine understanding of editorial concepts and how they translate and communicate visually.

The Design Director has a strong capacity to internalize project objectives and audience needs, to maintain that focus through the life of all projects, and to keep team members equally focused. This position requires resilience in the face of change, excellent collaborative capacity, and a problem-solving attitude.

In addition to design skills, the Design Director is a strong, efficient, and timely communicator, both verbally and in writing. Writing thoughtful and effective creative briefs and keeping stakeholders current on status are essential to the operation. Among the Design Director’s strong organizational skills is a demonstrated capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely and cost-effective completion.

The Design Director stays close to the latest trends in editorial design, particularly on the international design scene, and may consult on arts initiatives on campus.
