Education WriterThe United Federation of Teachers – the 200,000-member union of New York City public school teachers and other professionals working in schools, hospitals and child care — seeks a staff writer with a passion for public education and the ability to write clearly and accurately under deadline. We are looking for someone who can generate story ideas and write compelling news and feature articles about our members in the city schools and the issues they face. You should be an accomplished storyteller, but also skilled in news reporting that helps our readers understand the role that our members and the union play in building strong public schools. You should also be able to quickly turn around a story when news breaks. Ideally, you should be well-versed in new media.Major responsibilities:* Write longer-form feature and enterprise pieces and shorter news and service pieces for the New York Teacher, an award-winning, in-house publication for the union’s members;* Write breaking news stories for the website;* Be a member of the team that stays late one night every two to three weeks to do final proofreading, copy-editing and corrections;* Write articles for union newsletters;* Cover live events via Twitter;* Help, as needed, with other union communication, including proofreading, updating website content, and writing email blast messages, photo gallery captions and blurbs, and factsheets.Qualifications:* A minimum of two years’ professional journalism experience at a newspaper, magazine or news website;* Top-notch writing, reporting and proofreading skills; * A creative thinker, who can contribute ideas for features, news stories and related social media posts* Demonstrated knowledge of New York City education issues a plus;* Experience with website content management systems and InDesign a plus;* Willingness to work occasionally on weekends and in the evening;* Ability to expertly manage time, juggle varied duties and meet assigned deadlinesUFT IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER.
