The Public Relations and Social Media Manager is responsible for creating positive public awareness and helping to manage the HSS brand and reputation through a wide range of news and social media channels.

Working in partnership with the Senior Manager of Public Relations and Social Media, he/she helps manage and drive all social media initiatives, including the creation of content for the HSS Website, service lines, internal communications, and additional projects, as required. He/she develops and supports initiatives to grow HSS's social media channels and must create a positive and ongoing presence for HSS in this medium. He/she must be knowledgeable about current social media avenues, as well as the newest areas under development, and must be able to make appropriate thoughtful recommendations regarding HSS's entry into these new areas.

He/she should have a keen interest in science and healthcare policy and delivery. He/she works with hospital, medical, and scientific leadership to keep important medical and scientific advances in the forefront of public attention regionally, nationally, and globally. This includes writing and editing for publications, newsletters, and press releases. He/she must develop solid relationships with key media contacts and act as spokesperson on behalf of HSS, as necessary.

The Public Relations and Social Media Manager provides counsel to clinicians, researchers, and hospital administrators and leadership who interact with the media. Working with other members of the Communications Department, he/she is involved in the planning process and contributes creative ideas for events, stories, and employee communications.

This individual must have superior writing, interviewing, communication, and organization skills, as well as expertise in social media and other Web-based technologies, and metrics. He/she must be creative and proactive. He/she will work in both public relations and social media and must be able to repurpose materials developed for one area for use in the other.

Excellent teamwork skills are required, as this position requires a high level of coordination of work and interaction with hospital medical staff, employees, and external partners and vendors. He/she will need to exercise independent discretion and judgment to manage projects in a timely, cost-effective manner.

This position reports to the Senior Manager, Public Relations and Social Media.


The specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

-Help implement a strategic plan for social media through carefully designed initiatives that are coordinated with other areas of the hospital.
-Develop new initiatives for social media, including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, multimedia press releases, etc., with the goal of increasing the number of followers of HSS. Write and input content for, and monitor effectiveness of, initiatives.
-Build relationships and establish appropriate third-party alliances to help promote HSS strategically, especially through social media channels.
-Gain understanding of the department's job function, goals, and vision and how they relate to the overall organizational structure.
-Achieve national, regional, and local publicity on services, therapeutic franchises, and research.
-Develop creative and relevant articles, messages, and other content for scientific and non-scientific audiences, including press releases, articles, op-eds, brochures, annual report, HSS Website, HSS publications, and newsletters, working collaboratively with department colleagues, professionals throughout the hospital and externally.
-Conduct interviews with executives, physicians, and scientists and translate scientific/medical information into clear and compelling layman-friendly language that summarizes the current news and views of the institution.
-Prepare communications on clinical data presented at key medical meetings, as well as on studies accepted for publication. Represent the institution at medical meetings, when appropriate.
-Practice good judgment regarding confidential and sensitive information.
-Participate on task forces and in meetings, as required.


-A bachelor's degree is required, with a major in marketing, public relations, communications, advertising, or a related field preferred. A graduate degree is desirable.



-Minimum three to five years' experience in a public relations agency, with social media; writing and project management responsibility.
-Experience in healthcare and/or hospitals is highly desired.
-Demonstrated PR capability. Writing/Placement/Social Media portfolio is required.
-Experience managing multiple projects at once and achieving objectives on time and on budget.
-Proficiency in MS Office (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and ability to learn other software packages.
-Must be an organized self-starter, with the ability to multi-task and shift priorities easily in a busy, high-pressure, team environment.
-Good problem-solving and decision-making skills. Uses good judgment, tact, and discretion. Makes sound judgments independently but recognizes when supervisory assistance is needed.
-Strong interpersonal and customer-service skills. Has a likeable and engaging personality. Sense of humor and gracious, professional manner are important.
-High-energy, team player capable of managing the requests and needs of a diverse office.
-Highly organized, with excellent, demonstrated project management capability.
-Experience working in a matrixed work environment is desirable.
