Harlequin is seeking an Assistant/Associate Editor to join Harlequin Kimani’s editorial team. The position provides an excellent opportunity for a candidate to contribute to a growing and exciting program. S/he will be responsible for acquiring and developing manuscripts, and management and development of a diverse author base. The primary purpose is to ensure the ongoing and timely supply of high quality, saleable titles for the various publishing programs.

The ideal Assistant/Associate Editor candidate must have a sensibility for romance, acquired and edited women’s fiction, and be passionate about the book publishing industry.

Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to;

•Performs all editorial functions including reading and evaluating proposals and line editing.
•Oversees copy editing and author approval/alterations.
•Provides editorial input into packaging design in order to ensure key selling features are reflected in the product package.
•Provides input for vision team meetings with Art and Marketing, recommends titles and writes back cover copy and back page ads.
•Manages and develops the author base to elicit the highest quality of writing. Maintains positive author relationships.
•Works with respective author base to ensure correct editorial fit for the publishing strategy for the line. Reads submissions, responds to author/agents and monitors payments to authors.
•Represents the program/company at both internal and external conferences and with the media.

Qualifications, Skills and Competencies:
•Undergraduate Degree.
•3+ years progressive experience in publishing, including acquiring and editing.
•Able to cope and perform under pressure.
•Strong communication (listening, writing and speaking) skills.
•Commitment to the quality of the product.
•Ability to adapt to different business situations.
•Ability to manage execution, decisiveness, and think outside the box.
•Strong planning, prioritizing and organizational skills.
•Ability to establish and build relationships.
