The Duncan McIntosh Co. seeks a managing editor for Editor & Publisher magazine. This position requires strong organizational skills, a high level of journalism credentials and a solid understanding of the media industry. The managing editor must be a team player, tough yet tactful, friendly yet authoritative, and must be able to inspire a team of independent, professional people. This is a full-time, salaried position in our Irvine, CA office.

Job Description:

Organize, supervise, and participate in the development of all copy submitted to the magazine; work with management in the development of annual editorial calendar; set and enforce editorial deadlines.

Consult with editors, designers and publishers regarding content for each issue; provide direction and story outlines to freelancers and staff writers; supervise the submission process from initial assignment to final production, and ensure final product meets set editorial standards.

Work within an established budget and negotiate agreements with writers. Guide all manuscripts through the editorial process.

Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules.

Responsibilities:

• Facilitate strong media industry connections with a relevant editorial voice
• Maintain professional relationships with freelancers, develop story assignments, coordinate schedules/deadlines, and oversee payments
• Keep current with media trends and technology; analyze subscriber surveys and online metrics to understand reader interests and identify new strategies
• nterface with publisher and sales manager in order to maximize market share and advertising revenue
• Schedule and maintain the flow of all editorial material and ensure deadlines are met
• Generate, post and update online business news, data and original content as needed
• Create, maintain and update editorial print schedule
• Research/write feature stories for the magazine and website as needed
• Copy edit
• Travel to industry related events
• Proof final editorial pages
• Write and edit copy special projects, as assigned by the editor/publisher
