Children's Book Editor
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIESProduct Development •Oversee and assist in the development, planning and execution of Silver Dolphin novelty and books plus formats (approximately 30 titles per year).•Maintain overall editorial schedule and ensure all key customer account deadlines are met, as well as catalog ship and pub dates.•Communicate with production, editorial, and freelance talent during all phases of development and troubleshoot any related issues.•Ensure all titles meet Silver Dolphin’s standard of quality and artistic excellence.•Responsible for the accuracy of all information related to packaged and originated titles in database.•Proofread and approve book cover copy and catalog copy, write and proofread all sales tip sheets and marketing materials.•Provide sales and marketing department title information, copy, covers and interiors for bi-annual catalog.•Responsible for setting weekly creative meetings, generating new ideas and prioritizing projects.•Assist in the creation of mock ups and sales materials to secure customer commitments.•Attend weekly production meetings and communicate the status of each title related to the schedule, changes to format and art or design concerns.•Manage budgets for editorial expenses (freelance talent). Run preliminary and final publishing board proposals create deal point memo and contracts.•Work with authors and agents to secure permissions, releases, and endorsements and to obtain approval for text design, copyediting, cover design, and cover text.•Provide digi-ready manuscripts to other departments, such as marketing, and foreign rights.•Help in idea development and execution of refreshing Silver Dolphin backlist as well as development of new products created by Silver Dolphin authors based on existing properties.Business Development/Sales Execution KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES (List knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the job)•Desired candidate will have the ability to develop, track, and meet budgets and editorial schedules.•Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to direct copyeditors, designers and writers.•Possess the skills to perform internet research and a working knowledge of MS Office software, and the most recent edition of the Chicago Manual of Style.•Ability to write pub board proposals.•Must possess excellent communication skills, with experience presenting in front of editorial boards and at sales conferences.• Must be creative, but also analytical with a keen attention to detail. Candidate will possess 4-5 years experience as an Editor in a publishing house, with a preferred candidate having 5-10 years. Editorial experience with Children’s books or Novelty books.
