About the Department:
New York Road Runner’s Brand Marketing and Communications team is charged with managing the organization’s creative services, editorial, advertising, and digital operations. The team’s efforts build upon NYRR’s recent brand initiative and Run for Life platform as the organization seeks to tell the bigger NYRR story of huge positive impact; our ongoing focus on broadening our engagement with runners of all types; our efforts to strengthen our alignment with, and support of, our corporate partners; and our opportunity to unlock the power of our community in supporting our youth- and cause-related efforts.

About the Position:
The Coordinator, Public Relations position is a vital part of the PR department. The coordinator will work closely and collaboratively with the media team (Director, Senior Manager, and Assistant Manager) to execute NYRR’s overall external communications strategies. He/She will assist in developing and implementing communications initiatives, with the goal of gaining recognition and building greater positive awareness for NYRR. This will include the organization’s brand image, races, community events, instruction and training resources, and youth programs that serve to empower people of all ages and abilities to improve their health and well-being through the power of running and fitness.

This department seeks a qualified candidate with a strong communications background, and dual passion for the media relations and sports industries. This position will be responsible for assisting with all responsibilities that fall within the PR department.

Job Responsibilities:

•Draft media materials including press releases, media alerts, fact sheets, talking points, social media content, and other miscellaneous media materials
•In coordination with PR team and external PR agencies and consultants, help develop and implement strategic communications plans for NYRR brand initiatives and marquee running events, including the ING New York City Marathon, NYC Half, and others
•Establish strong relationships with print, broadcast, and digital media (hyperlocal, regional, national, and international)
•Proactively and strategically pitch the above media for NYRR events and activities, securing consumer and trade coverage
•Seek out new and distinct opportunities for NYRR to secure media coverage, keeping close attention to the running industry, news angles, and editorial calendars
•Will be the lead PR contact for several events, creating the PR plan, pitching stories, and executing media logistics on-site
•Assist with on-site media event operations for many NYRR events throughout the year
•Assist with press operations preparations for the ING New York City Marathon including the media credential application process and Media Center activities (press conferences, photo ops, etc.)
•Work closely with other NYRR departments including Event Development & Production, Business Development & Strategic Partnerships and Youth and Community Services to coordinate media efforts
•Oversee updates and expansion of NYRR’s Newsroom (nyrrmedia.org) and Intranet
•Manage PR team’s Twitter handle (@nyrrnews), and continue to grow the team’s social media strategy
•Update comprehensive, targeted local, national, and international media lists
•Monitor and organize press clippings
•Serve as administrative contact for the media team (ordering supplies, processing invoices, etc.)
•Manage media inbox (media@nyrr.org), responding to media inquiries timely and thoughtfully
•Assist on special projects as assigned


Job Requirements:

•Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in Communications or a related field
•Minimum 1-3 years’ PR experience including internships
•Exceptional written and verbal communications skills; experience in writing press releases and pitch letters
•Self-motivated with strong organizational skills, analytical talent, and attention to detail
•Ability to meet and perform under tight deadlines, think clearly under pressure, and exercise good judgment
•Understanding of the digital environment including website content and social media channels
•Must be proficient in Microsoft Applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook), and have experience with Vocus, Cision, or other public relations software and services
•Ability to work evenings and weekends, especially during peak event periods
•Passion for NYRR and our mission
