Manager, Media Relations
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: This position reports to the Head of External Communications. OVERALL ACCOUNTABILITY:The Manager, Media Relations is responsible for executing a media relations program to support corporate objectives and business unit goals. Interfacing with leadership across the organization, s/he will provide media relations counsel and support to the companyâ€™s core business lines - Individual Life, Group Insurance, Individual Disability and Retirement Solutions - in addition to its career agents. The position will serve as a company spokesperson with print, radio, television and online media outlets and bloggers. Additionally, s/he will help support crisis communications efforts; anticipate issues before they arise, as well as work reactively with effective rapid response. As a key partner to senior leadership, this position will work side-by-side with the Head of External Communications in implementing communications plans that differentiate the companyâ€™s spokespeople, products and services while advancing the corporate brand in the various markets served. Serving as an effective liaison with external and internal stakeholders, s/he will develop compelling messaging and communications which drive media interest and engagement, ensuring the organization is both proactive and responsive to media and market issues as they arise.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:- Partner with the Head of External Communications to develop and execute a public relations agenda to support and enhance Guardianâ€™s reputation across its four business lines - Individual Life, Group Insurance, Individual Disability and Retirement Solutions - in addition to supporting its network of 3,500 financial representatives.- Develop and cultivate relationships with target reporters at trade and national press. Focus will be on both business and personal finance media. - Work with businesses units to create compelling story angles that position key spokespeople as industry and market experts.- Write press releases, bylined articles, talking points and message documents in support of business priorities, thought leadership initiatives and new product launches and enhancements.- Consistently monitor news media for opportunities to insert Guardian into stories being told in the market. - Maintain awareness of editorial calendars and reporter agendas to proactively pitch stories and get ahead of media opportunities - Arrange interviews with Guardian executives; provide supporting documentation and materials to ensure communication of key messages. - Work closely with Corporate Communications and Marketing colleagues to ensure consistency of message. Share story ideas, tactics and media strategies to leverage exposure.- Help manage public relationâ€™s budget and relationships with agencies as appropriate.CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS:- A minimum of 5-10 years experience in media and/or corporate communications at a corporation or agency. Financial services experience strongly desired.- Strong contacts with business and personal financial journalists.- Solid track record of securing media placements by proactively creating story ideas and pitching press.- Proven ability to create thought leadership campaigns that tie business objectives with broader market trends.- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.- Energetic self-starter with the ability to work with all levels of management. Must have a demonstrated commitment to teamwork and have achieved success in partnering with colleagues across organizational lines to produce results. - Capacity to manage multiple projects at once with attention to detail, timelines and deliverables.- Ability to communicate complex business, financial, legal and regulatory issues clearly and accurately while being able to coach others in message development and delivery.- Social media knowledge / experience desirable.EDUCATION:Candidates will possess an undergraduate degree.LOCATION:This position will be located in our New York City office.
