Columbia College Chicago is an urban institution of over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students emphasizing arts, media, and communications in a liberal arts setting.

The Office of Institutional Marketing Communication/ Public Relations is seeking applications for a Public Relations Manager.

Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Public Relations (DPR), the Public Relations Manager conducts print, broadcast and social media outreach to promote increased awareness of the Columbia College Chicago brand, initiatives, centers, programs, fundraising and special events, as well as accomplishments of the President, faculty/staff, alumni, and students. The Public Relations Manager works closely with the Institutional Advancement team and other college schools, departments and centers to strategically plan and execute media relations efforts that support the overall objectives of the college. Working knowledge and experience with social media required.

The position does not offer relocation assistance.

Duties & Responsibilities

-Under supervision of DPR, develop, pitch and place stories about the college in business, trade, education, arts and consumer media (print, broadcast and new media).
-Support DPR in development and execution of communications plans; recommend and drive initiatives that improve public perception of the college.
-Cultivate media relationships through proactive outreach and responsiveness to inquiries/requests.
-Work with academic departments and campus units and offices to develop and execute appropriate and timely public relations efforts.
-Develop variety of support materials such as press kits, backgrounders, alerts, messaging documents, news releases, articles, scripted remarks, and other strategic PR-related materials.
-Plan, produce and edit video news/online shorts utilizing flip cam technology.
-In collaboration with DPR, establish benchmarks for effectiveness of PR/media outreach and media cultivation tools and evaluate/measure/report public relations results.
-Work cooperatively with colleagues and senior executives to coordinate major announcements and assist with crisis communications.
-Develop ad-hoc messages in support of development and sponsorship efforts; coordinate messaging and PR with Marketing team.
-Make and maintain personal contact with members of traditional and new media, both local, trades and national, to secure coverage of Columbia events, people or trends.
-Planning, project management and on-site communications coordination for internal and external college events.

Job Requirements

Minimum Education & Experience

-Degree in PR, Marketing/Communications, or related field, or comparable experience, required.
-Minimum 5-7 years progressive experience in PR with media relations specialty; agency experience required.
-Strong knowledge of traditional and social media relationship building, from trade publications to national outlets; established local, regional and national media contacts a plus.
-Solid experience integrating new/social media tactics into traditional pr/media plans.
-Blogger relations experience required.
-Knowledge of/interest in visual, performing, media and/or communication arts.


Preferred Qualifications

-Strong command of language/grammar and experience writing and editing high-quality new releases, news stories, feature stories, pitch letters, fact sheets and content for various media (print, video, social/viral, TV). A writing test will be required.
-Critical decision making skills and ability to be self-motivated and to work independently as needed.
-Knowledge of current and emerging communications methodologies and technologies.
-Proven ability to create and execute successful media pitches by phone, in person and online (e-mail, Twitter etc.) with traditional and new media.
-Experience with or ability to quickly learn and apply digital technology (flip cam etc.).
-Polished interpersonal/communications skills; confident in working with diverse stakeholders (including media, executives, donors, and colleagues).
-Organizational and time management skills; accountability for handling multiple concurrent projects and meeting critical deadlines.
-Familiarity with PR tracking and measurement resources, trends and best practices.
-Sound judgment under pressure, consistent with institutional priorities and best professional practices.
-Consistently approach challenges in positive, creative and solution-oriented manner.
-Work flexible schedule with occasional after-hours work to meet business needs.
-Strong knowledge of AP style.
-Proficiency in Mac and/or PC computer software platforms as well as Microsoft Office.
