The Role:

Bloomberg is seeking a talented and motivated UX Prototyper to join our founding Visual Data team. The team's goal is to be the industry leader in data visualization, and is proud to have been recognized for design innovations by the Webbies, Business Insider, Fast Company and others. The Visual Data team leverages the company’s unparalleled data, analytics and editorial content to create brand-differentiating, cutting-edge interactive data products for Bloomberg’s global business consumer audience and news media outlets. These data products focus on a variety of topics including the economy, politics, law, healthcare, energy, and finance and are be featured on all of Bloomberg’s media platforms, including web, mobile, and TV. The UX Prototyper will collaborate to create functional prototypes for engaging, interactive web applications. The selected candidate will work directly with design leads to build rapid iterations of the data products throughout the lifecycle of each product. This role will also work closely the design-development lead to facilitate the handover of the prototype to the web/mobile R&D teams, who will then turn these prototypes into deployable, production-quality software. The successful applicant should be well versed in industry leading front-end programming for web and mobile technologies, as well as strongly grounded in database development and other server-side methods of data collection and management.

The ideal candidate should have a passion for data and design along with a solid understanding of digital tools, trends, and infrastructure; and the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, clients, and senior executives. We are looking for a creative, multi-disciplinary team player with a positive “get-it-done” attitude who can work in an open and collaborative environment.


· BFA in graphic design, interaction design, product design and/or BS in computer science or a related field
· Front-end prototyping experience using HTML5, CSS3, DOM-scripting, JavaScript, and server-side scripting with Python/Ruby/PHP etc
· Experience with procedural graphics (Canvas, SVG) and implementing user interfaces
· Data research and analysis skills and demonstrated ability to develop strong and rigorous conceptual frameworks for interactive products
· The ability to work with diverse data formats (JSON, XML, scraped-web pages, Shapefiles) and database systems (MySQL, Postgres, CouchDB, Oracle, folders full of CSV files)
· Familiarity with graphical sketching environments (D3, Processing, NodeBox, Cinder)
· Contributions to open source software projects (please provide links, either to individual projects or ideally to your GitHub page; your application will not be considered without links)
· Ability to work on underspecified problems and manage multiple priorities
