Governing magazine, based in Washington, D.C., is seeking a Health Care writer with sharp reporting and writing skills, the ability to generate enterprise story ideas, a knack for nurturing sources and a desire to grow within our expanding organization. We’re looking for people who are team players and comfortable sharing their expertise with colleagues. The reporter will work closely with the editorial staff of Governing magazine and GOVERNING.com to continue to make our magazine and website the go-to source for news and analysis on state and local government.

Responsibilities include:
--Writing monthly, long-form features for Governing magazine
--Developing a beat focused on state and local health care policy and other health issues
--Providing coverage and analysis of developments in state and local governments
--Helping conceive and develop story ideas for the magazine and web
--Helping identify outside resources and reports to highlight
--Ability to represent GOVERNING in media appearances and at policy-related events

The ideal candidate is a self-starter, with knowledge of state and local government and experience in leveraging social media and multimedia to promote content and engage our audience. You must be adept at breaking news, analyzing news developments and juggling multiple deadlines.
GOVERNING balances general assignment and beat reporting in its coverage of states and localities. For this position, experience in covering health-care policy, including but not limited to the continuing implementation of the Affordable Care Act, is a plus.

Additional qualifications include:
--Bachelor's degree and at least 2 year's experience covering a regular beat for a news outlet.
--Knowledge of state and local government news and issues a plus
--Ability to develop original story ideas of interest to readership
--Strong writing and analytic skills
--Ability to write forward-looking stories
--Good news judgment. If news breaks, you recognize it, sound the appropriate alarms and start writing
--An interest in working with graphics and data
--Strong work ethic and motivation to succeed
--A positive, good-natured, energetic attitude
--A commitment to nonpartisan reporting and writing
