Senior Editorial Support Specialist

•The Senior Editorial Support Specialist is the lead contact for IEEE Transactions/Journals staff and the T/J conversion vendors to provide technical support for issues related to the effective use of all internal production systems.
•This individual also ensures the integrity of XML-tagged material and PDFs produced in-house and by vendors through the development of guidelines and processes to measure quality.
•Monitor all daily processes, workflows, and projects of tracking, information conversion, and editorial support, setting priorities and reporting issues to supervisor as needed.
•Act as main contact for software and hardware support, escalating calls to PC Help Desk and/or Publications Technology as necessary.
•Communicate effectively with vendors and provide follow-up and solutions for open issues.
•Design, develop, and test programs, databases, and macros and write supporting documentation to resolve workflow issues of a technical nature.
•Act as liaison between Content Engineering staff and editorial staff, taking the lead on resolving problems, implementing long-term solutions, spotting trends and training opportunities, and developing programmatic processes to streamline current workflows. Must be able to make recommendations and implement agreed-upon strategies.
•Monitor daily report of material arriving from vendors, set priorities.
•Develop macros and macro documentation for editorial use and implement plan for testing, release, and maintenance of new macros.
•Create scripts using Perl, Unix shell, and other appropriate programming tools to streamline conversion and editorial processes as required.
•Prepare documentation for script usage and implement plan for testing, release, and maintenance of scripts.
•Perform routine file/directory maintenance.
•Ensure timely capture and manipulation of author prepared text and graphics data.
•Work with staff to log, resolve, and document solutions for routine support problems and communicate results to peers and management.
•Maintain, troubleshoot, and order supplies for Pubs laser printers.

•Bachelor’s degree and a strong background in computer science, with an emphasis on the following: Unix, Windows, and Macintosh operating systems, XML (and associated FOSIs and DTDs), programming languages (Perl, Visual Basic, and Java preferred), Word, TeX, composition software, PostScript and PDF file creation.
•4 or more years of experience in pre-press production preferably with a service bureau, printer, or publishing company.
•4+ years directly related programming experience.
•A working knowledge of XML editing software is a plus.
