Overview:We are seeking a Copy Editor for several general education monthly newsletters, one weekly newsletter about education grants, and EducationDaily.com®, a website that is updated daily and provides in-depth practical and legal information, tools, and resources to K-12 education staffs and school attorneys. As a Copy Editor, you will be responsible for reviewing 800-word articles and case summaries written by editors as well as posting copy to the site daily, including legal roundups and case files to the Legal Research Center. You will be required to collaborate with editors about needed changes and updates. You also will have responsibility for ensuring that content is accurate, error-free, and consistently follows AP standards and LRP style guidelines. Additionally, you will prepare and disseminate e-bulletins to subscribers. Responsibilities:Copyedit newsletter stories and web features daily. Gain an understanding of general education. Interact with all other editors, including legal editors, to ensure stories and blurbs are clear and error-free. Write blurbs for some stories posted to the website. Write brief summaries of stories for electronic marketing. Work directly with editors to produce several monthly newsletters and one weekly newsletter using InDesign publishing software. Ensure those publication deadlines are met. Copyedit content for ancillary products, such as books and pamphlets. Participate and contribute to the copy editors' meeting where style guides are reviewed and revised.Minimum Requirements:- 4 year college degree- 1 to 3 years of copy editing experience- Knowledge of Editorial and Production processes- Knowledge of AP Style- Experience working under daily deadlines- Proven ability to edit content for clarity, grammar, and overall presentation- Proven ability to write clearly and concisely and to help editors rework confusing or unclear text- Familiarity with publishing software, specifically Adobe InDesign, along with basic Microsoft Office operating systems Desired Qualifications:The ideal candidate will have a personable demeanor and possess a multitude of skills and abilities, including: Attention to Details: You must be able to diligently review your work in order to eliminate errors in your copy. Quality: You must be able to maintain high standards despite pressing deadlines and ensure that excellence is the top priority. Planning, Prioritizing & Goal-Setting: You must be able to manage multiple tasks, determine urgency, set goals to ensure standards and guidelines are being met, and organize tasks. Influence & Persuasion: You must be able to use tact when expressing ideas or opinions, present new ideas to authority figures, adapt presentations to suit a particular audience, and respond to objections successfully. Most Important Technical Skills -- Web research and posting skills: You should have strong Web research skills and be able to learn how to post to the website, add links to stories, and use community software.
