Recommends and provides meaningful, strategic content for vital Association initiatives and deliverables, including publications, conferences and professional development. Manage production of ALA’s monthly educational magazine (Legal Management, in print in 2013 and slated for fully digital delivery in 2014) and biweekly digital publications, Your ALA News and ALA Currents, including oversight of editorial content and strategic development, layout/design work, production and delivery. Supervises the publication-related work of the Editor (currently in house), Assistant Editor (currently an open position, slated to be filled in late 2013), graphic design team (currently outsourced) and other vendors as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1. Knowledge of the practice and principles of magazine and newsletter publishing, as normally acquired with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field and at least five years of editorial management experience. Association management and publishing-related experience is a plus.

2. Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills, combined with knowledge of design and digital production.

3. Familiarity with a magazine’s business aspects, including budgeting and advertising sales. Able to work well cross-functionally with accounting, business partner relations and marketing teams, among others, to ensure smooth workflow and delivery of content to Association members.

4. Understands how to turn insights and ideas into valuable content for the ALA community.

5. Strong organizational skills, careful with details and able to meet tight deadlines. Able to work on several projects simultaneously, with excellent results.

6. Strong people skills to manage unit and to coordinate efforts of volunteers, staff and vendors.

7. Knowledge of the legal management profession and ability to apply it to content delivered to ALA members in myriad ways.

8. Knowledge of how to use critical software (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite) and Internet resources, as well as digital publication delivery platforms.
