POSITION SUMMARY:
COPY EDITOR (PART-TIME or FULL-TIME)

Reporting to the Executive Editor, Special Issues, the Copy Editor will be one of a small team of Copy Editors responsible for fulfilling the copyediting requirements for Cook’s Illustrated and Cook’s Country magazines and their companion websites, along with numerous special issues and ATK marketing and promotional materials.

We are open to a Full-Time or Part-Time (20 hours/week) model. The position is site based.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF POSITION:

oPer year, copyedit 6 issues (32 pages each) of Cook’s Illustrated and 6 issues of Cook’s Country at 2 key junctures in the editorial process.
oCopyedit 10 to 15 special issues (between 64 and 144 pages each) per year.
oCopyedit material to be published on companion websites and in email newsletters.
oKey in first and second-round copyedits to layouts using InCopy desktop publishing software. Ensure that all changes are properly entered.
oReview/approve proofreader marks for Cook’s Illustrated and Cook’s Country.
oCopyedit marketing and promotional materials as necessary.
oAlong with Managing Editors, sign off on contract proofs of Cook’s Illustrated and Cook’s Country pages.
oCheck work assigned to freelancers for correctness and accuracy.
oMaintain ATK style guides.
oSuggest changes for improving copyediting processes when necessary.
oManage departmental workflow and division of responsibilities, ensuring that timelines are met and work is distributed equitably.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
oExcellent copyediting and proofreading skills
oBasic understanding of InCopy software or other similar desktop publishing program
oFamiliarity with Macintosh and Microsoft Word
oKnowledge of food and home cooking
oAttention to detail and ability to meet key deadlines including flexibility during peak workload periods

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
oBA/BS (or equivalent) in Journalism, Communications, English or related field
o5 to 7 years of magazine or newspaper copyediting experience, along with some project management.
oA culinary degree or hands-on cooking experience, while not a requirement, is a significant plus.
