The Freedom House Fellowship Program based in Washington, DC and New York is offered in periods of 4, 6, and 9 months. This competitive unpaid fellowship program is offered to researchers, academics, and professionals with expertise in human rights and democracy.

We are currently accepting applications for visiting Policy Research Fellows to begin in September 2014. The research fellows will conduct research, write policy analysis, and provide commentary to media. They will interact with Freedom House experts and have access to policy discussions at Freedom House and other research institutes where many of the cutting-edge debates on democracy and human rights take place.

Successful fellowship candidates will report directly to the Executive Vice President in DC.

Minimum Qualifications

Relevant research, academic, and/or professional experience
Expertise and track record of analysis on countries or regions of interest to Freedom House such as East Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, Middle East and North Africa, or Eurasia, or on themes related to political freedom or civil rights
Record of conducting rigorous policy research on issues of interest to Freedom House
Expertise in writing op-eds and giving media interviews
Some Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct policy-relevant research on issues of democracy or human rights and provide commentary to media in specific area of expertise
Produce, at a minimum, either a Freedom House special report or two policy briefs before the end of the fellowship
Present to the media and at public events as a Freedom House Visiting Fellow
Washington DC based Fellows will have opportunities to meet with U.S. government officials, policy experts, and opinion leaders and to organize a public event to stimulate discussion on chosen research topic
