Reporting to the editor, the art director has design responsibilities for Plastics News. We are seeking a creative person who will make our print and web products catch the attention of busy executives, while also being a stickler for accuracy and an eye for detail. The art director will handle day-to-day page layout and headline writing, especially for Page 1 and special report sections, and will work with the assistant managing editor and graphics editor to ensure that the publication has a cohesive look and tone that reflects its dominant position in our market.Requirements The successful candidate must have a minimum of five to seven years of print and online design and layout experience, preferably working on a fast-paced, news-based publication and Web site. The ideal candidate will have well-above-average proficiency in Quark and/or InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, expertise in pre-press PostScript file construction and PDF workflow, and strong photo and illustration sourcing skills.Confidence in manipulating data and infographics would be very helpful. A background in business news journalism is strongly preferred. Experience in Flash-based design, Dreamweaver, HTML, Java Script and Shockwave is preferred.A college degree in art, design, journalism or related fields required.Organization OverviewPlastics News is a 45,000-circulation, weekly newspaper based in Detroit.
