In 1968, the Urban Institute was founded by President Johnson to bring scientific, independent, and nonpartisan analysis to the problems facing American cities and their residents. Today, The Urban Institute continues to analyze policies, evaluate programs and offer independent facts, rigorous analysis and evidence-based solutions to inform policymakers and the public about the challenges and opportunities confronting our nation.

The Urban Institute recently launched an organization-wide initiative to increase its visibility and impact. This initiative includes an ongoing comprehensive website redevelopment that will launch in the first half of 2014.

To support this work, the Urban Institute is hiring a smart, creative, digital content specialist who will contribute to the organization’s digital editorial strategy and communicate with key Urban Institute audiences including national, state and local decision makers; the broader research community; members of the media; and interested citizens. S/he must have the ability to translate complex research into compelling digital content for a range of audiences.

The person in this position will play a major role in developing institutional content for our new platform, timely pieces for the daily news cycle, and newsletters for the organization’s centers and projects.
This is a unique opportunity to help build a new program for visibility and impact that is rooted in the Institute's strong reputation for providing nonpartisan, evidence-based policy solutions.

The Digital Content Specialist is part of a dynamic and growing team at the Institute. S/he reports to the Director of Digital Communications and will work closely with research staff and leadership, executive office staff and others to craft clear, concise and compelling content for Urban Institute website.

Responsibilities
The Digital Content Specialist

? Is primarily responsible for creating copy for core website pages on urban.org.
? Writes and edits monthly, bimonthly and quarterly newsletters for communications and Urban Institute research centers.
? Performs basic CMS production on core site content.
? Writes and edits blog posts and other content as needed.
? Works with the publications and editorial team to write research paper abstracts, summaries, bullet points and other content that can be repurposed for the web.
? Trains and assists digital content contributors from Urban Institute centers.
? Works with production specialists to provide general quality control/assurance across Urban Institute’s digital properties.
? Works with digital and strategic communications staff to leverage relevant content from research centers.

Qualifications
? Bachelor's degree in political science, communications, marketing, journalism or related field and minimum 2-5 years related work experience or equivalent combination
? Strong writing skills
? Strong substantive and copy-editing skills.
? Experience with Wordpress, and other enterprise-level content management systems
? Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop.
? Strong project management skills
? Ability to form relationships with a range of staff, including data-driven researchers
? Ability to understand and interpret data and translate it for mainstream audiences
? Demonstrated experience in MS Office, Word, and Excel. May require database management
? Experience with HTML, CSS and javascript are a plus, but not required.
