Art Director, Character Art / Illustration
Nickelodeon's many beloved characters have forged strong emotional relationships with our viewers. But what happens when the TV is off? In publishing, digital media, consumer products and all their other off-air manifestations, these characters still need to come to life and connect with viewers, even when they can't speak or move. That's where the NCR Character Art and Illustration group comes in, creating custom illustration work and show-based character art that communicates a world of personality and emotion and deepens fans' relationships with our brands.A creative leader – with extensive experience bringing world-class animated characters to vivid life in 2D and 3D illustration – who will oversee in-house and external illustrators, 3D modelers and character artists supporting Nickelodeon’s Consumer Products business. This position will report to the VP/Creative Director of Character Illustration and Media Products. Responsibilities:•Supervise, direct and review character art and illustrations produced by internal and/or external (freelance) artists. Ensure work meets Nickelodeon’s high creative standards and ambitious business goals.•Assign projects to the most appropriate internal and external (freelance) artists.•Review and confirm consistent character modeling of all Nickelodeon characters on print and consumer product projects through art direction, “bluelining” and creative feedback.•Collaborate closely with VP/Creative Director and other relevant NCR creative leads on the development and creation of character art for all style guides and assets designed for off-channel use.•When necessary, develop 2D character designs for CGI properties.•Maintain an awareness of the various Nickelodeon properties, past and present, including property styles and sensibilities.•Partner with Design Art Directors to share assets and illustrations.•Meet weekly with the VP/Creative Director to review current projects and provide status updates.•Interact daily with the Project Managers and ensure projects meet goals, are delivered on time and within budget.•As assigned by VP/Creative Director, oversee exploratories and/or special projects.•Conduct performance reviews and help set goals for illustration staff.•Responsible for guiding the development and training of new internal and external (freelance) illustrators.Basic Qualifications:•8-10 years of experience•Expert in understanding and illustrating all Nickelodeon characters/properties.•Strong creative ability and aesthetic judgment.•Solid drawing skills.•Extensive experience in licensed character art and illustration.•Knowledge of latest creative software.•Ability to work in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment.•Excellent skill in and instinct for creative collaboration.•Strong leadership skills.
