Your Role

This is a Community Editor position working across multiple Patch sites. As a Community Editor, you’ll become part of a dynamic and innovative team of journalists, engineers, designers, business and marketing and sales professionals. You will work collaboratively with and for a team of Local Editors, Field Editors, Regional Editors, Senior Regional Editor, Advertising Managers and Regional Publishers. In this role, you will focus on making the experience of Patch readers compelling and engaging, making Patch a “must-read” every day.

You Will Be Responsible For:

Identifying, recruiting and cultivating a vibrant and active blogger/contributor group in each town - both virtually and in person.

Driving social media engagement and success stories.

Proactively interacting with online communities across all platforms.

Identify and target groups to demonstrate the Patch platform as a community outreach tool and train them how to use it. Work with LEs to support and encourage UGC from community groups and organizations and implement specific UGC initiatives on local sites.

Serving as the “face” of all or some Patches on their homepages, thereby taking on a role as responsive ambassador for each community, including:

Responding to feedback” emails

Evaluating pitches and requests for coverage and working closely with senders so they can utilize all aspects of the open Patch platform instantly and directly.

Promoting user-generated content in newsletters (linkouts and direct featuring), homepages and social media.

Operating Facebook, Twitter accounts and other social media accounts for your Patches.

Relaying relevant news tips to your manager and colleagues as they appear.

Analyzing metrics on reach and readership to find ways to improve.

Posting routine articles as needed.

Collaborate with fellow, news-producing Local and Field Editors to ensure all daily e-newsletters are full of fresh, relevant and compelling local content—communication is critical in this role.

Assist with all other Local Editors when breaking news happens and/or we need all hands on deck.

This position will cover the following Patch towns: Bethesda-Chevy Chase,Silver Spring, Bowie, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Perry Hall, Towson, Timonium, Catonsville, Elkridge, Columbia, Ellicott City

Your Qualifications:

An absolute passion for citizen involvement in journalism and a keen understanding of the value it can add to the pursuit of truth by professional practitioners of the craft.

Entrepreneurial spirit and drive; start-up experience a plus.

Experience in online community building -- using tools and strategies for seeding conversations. and engaging with your users.

Demonstrated news judgment.

Comfort with being a leader/local celebrity in the coverage area, not merely an observer but aparticipant.

Demonstrated ability to manage your time, as well as plan and prioritize your work.

Flexibility and a willingness to change directions.

Passion for — and adept skill in — writing for the web, social networking and community journalism.

Understanding of the value and impact of carefully curated and aggregated content.

Car ownership (a must) and flexibility to work from anywhere — be it at home, from your car, at a coffee shop or the high school football game.

Willingness/ability to live in or very close to the relevant market location.
