Job Description

National Journal seeks an innovative, high-energy journalist to help us produce the most-read, most-influential magazine on politics and policy in Washington. The ideal candidate will have top-tier editing chops, excellent news judgment and a proven track record of producing content that works seamlessly across platforms – from print to digital to video to social media.

The Managing Editor for National Journal magazine will work with the magazine’s Executive Editor and other senior newsroom leaders to shape the future of the magazine; manage a team of journalists; conceptualize and assign thought-leading stories on politics and policy and the culture of Washington; and edit both magazine-length features and shorter, front-of-the-book pieces.

Responsibilities Include:

•Setting high expectations for reporters to produce timely analysis and lively writing
•Staying on top of news developments and maintaining expertise in relevant topic areas
•Conceiving and editing stories for National Journal magazine
•Conceiving and selecting covers for National Journal magazine
•Managing the integration of graphics and photos with text
•Meeting deadlines for print production
•Assuming responsibilities of the Executive Editor when the editor is away
•Making freelance assignments

Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:
