Crain’s Chicago Business is seeking a Director of Digital Strategy to lead its growing digital publishing and data sales businesses. The ideal candidate should have expert knowledge of the best practices in digital publishing, including mobile and social, have a proven track record of new business creation, project management, sound editorial credentials and be a sophisticated user of web analytics in order to drive traffic and revenues.

Job Summary

· The Director of Digital Strategy will be charged with maximizing the advertising sales, audience development and e-commerce revenue potential of Crain’s existing digital businesses—Web sites, and; mobile site and app products; as well as an extensive variety of e-newsletter, video and data offerings.

· The candidate must fully embrace the transition to a mobile-first strategy and will leverage Crain’s strengths to develop new digital products spanning all distribution channels and targeting new demographic audiences.

· The candidate will also work with Audience Development, Custom Media and Event department peers to develop new digital, database marketing strategies to grow revenue in those areas.

· The candidate will be a key brand-level leader as the Company executes technology upgrades across many critical systems, including CMS, ad serving, online event registration and more.

· The ability to work across functions of the organization—editorial, sales, marketing, events, audience development and technology—is a must. A strong familiarity with the online advertising industry is a required. The candidate will interact with the sales team to create new online advertising opportunities and pricing strategies and with the editorial team to maximize the value of Crain’s award-winning editorial content. Experience as reporter or editor is a plus.

Other key requirements include:

Understanding of social media, e-mail marketing best practices, knowledge of SEO/SEM, a basic understanding of HTML/CSS and strong project management skills.
