Job Summary

The Social Media and Digital Content Strategist will be responsible for developing and implementing coherent, creative and effective content for all web properties, including social media, in order to build AJWS’s online community, raise the organization’s profile and influence among key audiences, and support its advocacy and fundraising goals.
Reporting to the Director of Public Engagement and Strategic Content, the Social Media and Digital Content Strategist will establish specific strategies for AJWS’s website and social media feeds and channels (Facebook: AJWS HQ, AJWS Chicago, AJWS Los Angeles, AJWS San Francisco, Ruth Messinger; Twitter: @AJWS, @Ruth_Messinger, @AJWSinAfrica, @AJWSinAmericas, @AJWSinAsia) and will be responsible for conceptualizing and drafting content for AJWS’s social media channels and website.
The Social Media and Digital Content Strategist will collaborate closely with communications staff responsible for online communications and the web, as well as with colleagues across the organization working in international programs, fundraising, and domestic advocacy. The Social Media and Digital Content Strategist will be responsible for achieving measureable results.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • • Develop and implement content for all web landing pages, the AJWS homepage and AJWS’s blog;

  • • Develop and implement AJWS’s social media strategy, making recommendations and coordinating with colleagues across the organization to highlight AJWS’s international and national programs;

  • • Work with the Director of Public Engagement and Strategic Content and other colleagues to ensure that AJWS’s voice on social media reflects the values, culture and brand of the organization;

  • • Monitor and evaluate institutional AJWS accounts on Facebook and Twitter and others established for AJWS’s president and sub-brands to ensure the AJWS brand is best represented online;

  • • Manage and balance day-to-day social media activities and social media campaigns;

  • • Represent AJWS in strategic social media spaces by engaging in online conversations, answering questions, posting comments on relevant blogs, etc;

  • • Work with AJWS’s digital team and external consultants to engage new supporters, including donors and activists, to achieve our fundraising goals and acquire new subscribers to our e-lists;

  • • Establish and monitor effective benchmarks for measuring the impact of social media content; analyze, review, and report on the effectiveness of social media campaigns to identify new opportunities and adjust our strategies;

  • • Provide AJWS colleagues with regular feedback gained from social media monitoring in order to evolve AJWS’s social media presence;

  • • Monitor trends in social media tools, applications, and tactics to gauge what’s important for AJWS to be using.


  • • Outstanding web writing, editing and proofreading skills;

  • • A minimum of three years’ experience in creating content for social media efforts designed to build support for advocacy and political campaigns and/or charities and non-profit organizations with a proven track record in building social media followership;

  • • In-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and their respective participants (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Pinterest etc.) and how they can be deployed effectively to advance organizational goals;

  • • Savvy, sophisticated sensibilities in monitoring the news cycle—particularly related to international issues and policies that relate to AJWS’s work—in order to capitalize on timely opportunities for social media;

  • • Strong project management skills, including exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to drive and manage projects from conception to completion;

  • • Strong record of using social media analytics programs to improve social media performance;

  • • Strong knowledge and use of search engine optimization (SEO);

  • • Capable of working well with a wide variety of personalities and leadership styles across a complex organization;

  • • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and work independently in a fast-paced environment, including evenings and weekends, when required;

  • • Enthusiasm, professionalism and a passion for social media, public relations and marketing;

  • • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint);

  • • Knowledge of politics, advocacy, human rights, international development and the American Jewish community a plus. Must possess a commitment to global justice and deep respect for other cultures.
