Purpose of the Role: The Vice President, HMH Studios - Design will have the unique opportunity to transform the HMH design studio, by creating a forward looking and unified approach to how HMH uses design principles in way that will have a significant impact on teaching and learning. We are looking for a dynamic leader to become part of the transformative story of HMH, whom has demonstrated the ability to lead a large team and who has proven they can impact a large scale, strategic change. The successful candidate will drive HMH product design and user experience (UX), from conceptualization, prototyping, and design through all phases of the product development life cycle, leading in-house teams, outsource partners and vendors to deliver best-practice, innovative learning experiences that reflect HMH product identity and product experience goals to 21st-century learners (PreK-12 and Consumer) that reflect HMH product identity and experience goals.

Job Responsibilities:

* Articulates, champions, and executes HMH's design vision
* Leads all aspects of HMH's newly created Design Studio, including graphic design, typography, layout and composition, user interface (UI) design, animation, character design, motion graphics, interactive and interaction design, graphics and audio design, and audio and video design, across all media and for all product types (including apps, websites, games, books/eBooks, and videos)
* Provides creative and interactive design direction for all programs of learning at all stages of development
* Leads fast-paced, high-volume studio to implement optimal approaches to delivering HMH products on schedule, on budget, and to agreed-upon quality and scope; consistently reviews development processes and tools to improve quality and contain costs
* Leads and develops a global team of Design Architects (at least 50-60 members) to support a unified content development process; understands the requirements of PreK-12 educational and consumer markets
* Leads and mentors the Design Studio team to develop innovative design, ensuring appropriate resource utilization while providing cross-media competence development and training opportunities
* Communicates with the Design Studio team on a regular basis to ensure appropriate levels of coaching and feedback are provided
* Completes performance reviews and ensures that all Design Architects meet or exceed organizational standards
* Evaluates and selects outsource partners and vendors for product design activities; supports the global outsource partner network to deliver design and development components based on predefined metrics of quality, performance, budget, and schedule
* Utilizes user research and analytics to deliver optimal HMH user experience; leads the user-testing process and engages in other user-centric activities
* Keeps abreast of current and future design technologies and initiatives with a view to leveraging them to create and lead the way with innovative, engaging, interactive products for 21st-century learners

Requirements:

* Ability to create and drive the design vision and strategy for a complex and wide-ranging product catalog
* Strong design/aesthetic sensibilities
* Vision to anticipate changes and trends in the industry and translate potential changes to active strategies that position HMH for success
* Ten or more years Interactive Product Design leadership experience, preferably with learning products targeting children and young adults from ages 4 to 18
* Proven experience leading cross-discipline creative teams, including animators, UI/UX designers, print designers, 3D artists, motion graphic artists, illustrators, and game designers
* Progressive thinker about the design process and how and where design best fits into a complex content development process
* Experience in defining and managing design-related brand properties (for example, character and branded publishing titles) and in ensuring that design and brand are consistently applied across media, products, and markets and that their integrity is protected
* Experience in design research (formative and summative), and in understanding how best to bring user and usage analytics to product design and content development
* Ten or more years of proven people management and educational product design experience
* Strong people-leading skills, with the ability to develop, coach, and provide support effectively in a matrix environment
* Passionate about creating engaging, fun, and effective digital learning products
* Strong organizational skills and knowledge of sales, marketing, design, and production issues
* Experience in collaborating across diverse, geographically dispersed groups
* Experience in building, leading, and managing a high-performance team

Preferred:

* Proven track record and portfolio as Creative Director / Design Leader in a global organization leading geographically dispersed design teams
* Experience developing learning solutions for the K-12 and consumer markets
* Specialist knowledge of the learning and user experience requirements of PreK (preschool) learners
* Practical experience designing and/or deploying 21st-century PreK-12 learning solutions
* Experience in game design and/or video/TV creative direction preferred
* Experience in the educational publishing industry, including children's and young adults' television and digital media

Educational Qualifications/Certifications:

* Degree (preferably with a post-graduate qualification) in one or more design disciplines such as graphic design, animation, multimedia design, interactive design, or user experience
