POSITION: Director, Information Technology


The Director of Information Technology is responsible for the overall planning, organizing, and execution of all IT functions of MacNeil/Lehrer Productions and PBS NewsHour’s technology infrastructure. This position is key to bridging IT and broadcast technologies for one of the most respected news programs on the air today. This includes directing all IT operations to meet company requirements as well as the support and maintenance of existing applications and development of new technical solutions.

Reporting Relationships: Computer Support Specialist

Principal Responsibilities:

1.Provides leadership, vision, and management to the IT department;
2.Oversees the development, design, and implementation of new applications and changes to existing computer systems and software packages;
3.Responsible for the ordering, acquisition, inventory, and disposition of hardware and software;
4.Develops, reviews, and certifies all back-up and disaster recovery procedures and plans;
5.Analyzes the complex business needs of the employees and recommends technical solutions;
6.Ensures the consistency and maintainability of existing applications by creating, maintaining, and enforcing standards and procedures for implementing technical solutions;
7.Directs and prioritizes the work load of subordinate personnel;
8.Participates in all hardware and software evaluations and maintains vendor contracts;
9.Maintains Nortel CS1000 VOIP Telephone System.

The Director of IT oversees the design and implementation of our Windows server/client network at MacNeil/Lehrer Productions and PBS NewsHour; installs and upgrades computers and provides basic training; maintains and troubleshoots the iNews Newsroom system; maintains Exchange server; maintains network LAN/WAN; maintains Nortel Communication Server; and, provides liaison with hardware and software manufacturers and vendors.

The Director of Information Technology reports to the Vice President. The position is based in Arlington, Virginia. Some infrequent travel required.


Minimum of Bachelors of Science degree or five years computer/networking experience; strong knowledge of Windows server/clients and Exchange server is mandatory; experience with Nortel VOIP System or equivalent is preferred; experience with the iNews Newsroom system and/or broadcast editing/video systems is preferred. Applicant should have good organizational and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to communicate clearly and effectively to various individuals at all levels; also, the ability to work independently and to work well in a high-pressured news environment is very important..

STARTING SALARY: Commensurate with experience
