The Smithsonian Books Editorial Internship is designed to provide a meaningful, hands-on learning experience. It offers a unique opportunity to learn about all aspects of book publishing including writing, editing, and project management skills and to gain practical experience in the field of book publishing. Through weekly production meetings and ad hoc/informal meetings with the Director, Marketing Director, and Editor, the Intern will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of how all the elements of books (text, design, illustration) fit together and the progression of steps from acquiring a title to delivering it in the warehouse. The Intern will be mentored by the Editor, who will arrange for monthly development meetings to evaluate the skills learned and experiences of the internship, reflect on how they apply to the Intern’s education/career goals, and chart a course for the coming months. The Intern will learn how to:•write jacket copy •copy edit captions, marketing materials, and jacket copy •analyze, track, and manage image submission for illustrated booksThe Intern will work on the following projects:•2015 Treasures of the Smithsonian Engagement Calendar (desk calendar)•The Smithsonian Book of Air and Space Trivia (trade non-fiction trivia)•The Smithsonian First Ladies Collection (collection-based guide) •The Making of an Assistant President (trade non-fiction) The ideal candidate will be passionate about the written word, tech savvy, reliable, organized, and self-motivated, with great attention to detail and the ability to work successfully as part of a team.
